you can hit it even though it will spin by hitting nut flat central,to stretch it not knock it round ,it does work ive had quite a few to doJames you are correct, there isnt enough clearance to slice the nut off, the thread goes beyond the point where the hub starts. And battering it with the punch isnt working now cos the whole lot is spinning.
I have since found that the nut and thread were the easy bits, its the bearing shaft inside thats the bugger.
I have got all the plumbing and rad out tonight to give me more room.
Tempted to see if I can grind/cut a section of the fan hub off to give access for the big grinder to slice the shaft off, but it seems to be ally, so wary of grinding that, dont fancy exploding discs
Still think the new ( 2nd hand case) is the easiest option, assumin, I can get the flippin crankshaft bolt and pulley off.
Thanks for all the ideas chaps - keep em coming.
Same on a tdi id say discool, but I had no idea the vacuum unit was at the front on a serp though!
Oi Mr Noisy, you're fecking worng, it wasn't poor technique - actually it was no fecking technique......
Seriously, we all have to start somewhere and learn ( even if its the hard way :doh
Thanks for all your help guys
The vac hose is just just over the pully.
I has to replace the water pump (the bearing failed) the only time a spanner has been used on the engine other than a plug and oil change. Nice and clean inside, even supprised me![]()
I wouldnt bother putting the viscous back on theyre a pain in the arse, pop down scrap yard & find a lecky fan off an old escort or something, switch & a fuse & job sorted, never have to worry about it again !
Ahh it's a v8. not tdi
