Air chisel is my friend for all things seized in the workshop, it literally is the unstoppable tool.

Kind of annoyed you cut everything to pieces before asking for more help!! :(
 
Thanks for all the help chaps, I can't keep hitting with BFH now, cos the pulley is loose, so its all just spinning, no way to hold it all tight.

well I've admitted defeat and ordered a new timing case cover and fan.

So plan on removing existing timing case cover with fan attached, and replacing with new case, and then copper grease on threads before installing new fan.
 
for future reference it doesnt matter if it spins ,as with the hitting with punch your not trying to knock it round but stretch each flat in the same way if you hit tube around track rod end thread
 
and for future reference for anyone reading etc, never tighten the fan on, just spin it up by hand and leave it, it'll never come off during normal use and that way its not too tight next time either :)

maybe that was the fate of yours steve? :(
 
I reckon someones locktited it :p

I tightened mine when I put it on last! Spin it up by hand then give it a small jerk just so it kinda nips up to make sure its secure, and its come away the last two times I've needed to take it off
 
Yeah,I always nip mine up,but it has always come off again easily-the thought of that thing spinning off under the bonnet,is why I nip it up
 
As said I reckon someones glued it, if he's taken the pulley off but cant get the fan off it'd be cheaper just to put a nut splitter on there than get a new timing case
 
Doc, thanks, good idea, but couldn't get a nut splitter on it as the fan hub is still in situ.

All the nut splitters I have seen are closed, is there an open ended version??
 
other option would be to oxy it off or slice the bolt off and fit an electric fan incase you need one again

So who's gonna lend me their SNAP-ON 1 3/4" hydraulic nut splitter?????

You make a bodged one, HD G clamp with some blades and then torque it til it pops it, may just work :p

if not can you get a reciprocating saw in there ?
 
Tried recip saw, blade wont touch the shaft though, its hardened. Its the end of the bearing shaft that the flange is pressed onto.
 
can you get a grinder or saw onto the coupling and then once that piece is off you could just leave the bolt sticking out ?
 
Defo better than new casing and much less work, but have you shagged the fan bearing, that's my concern!

Would suggest heat on the nut but similar problem.

I'd be going in with a hacksaw, working around the nut to weaken it sufficiently to get/#### it off, new viscous and were good.

Can get fan blades off viscous easy enough, but I don't think that applies anymore lol :p

Don't need no viscous on a 300 if his systems good and isn't towing anything ridiculous ;)
