Hi Guys, I wonder if any of the Gurus here can help?

I recently bought a Faultmate FCR 60 from BBS for my 2002 P38. I connected it first time and it reported a left rear ABS sensor problem (which I expected as I was Getting the dreaded ABS Fault / Traction Control Failure messages). I swapped the sensor for a new one and then connected the Faultmate in order to clear the fault codes and it said that it was not licensed for may vehicle...

Lost of emails back and forward to BBS (who were very helpful) and they sent me a file to reset the Faultmate. Did this and the unit still says that it is not licensed... Curiously it is not showing a VIN number for my vehicle and using OdbWiz also shows no VIN...

As I will have to pay to return the Faultmate to Cyprus (and they'll charge for looking at it and returning it if it is a non-warranty problem), I thought that I would check to see if anyone has had something similar happen?

I suspect that the VIN number is not being read correctly or is being returned as a blank (and thus being rejected by Faultmate).

As an aside, I have still got an issue with the ABS (looks like the ECU as the cabling is fine, as is the sensor)...

Have you cleaned the sensor and its connector and made sure its seated properly .
If you do this and it reapers could be worn hub bearing .

I suspect you disconnected the Faultmate while it was still doing something, this may have wiped part of the flash memory, it's a bit like pulling the plug on a PC before it's shut down which causes disc corruption.

No wet carpets and I do not believe that the hub bearing has a problem as I have tested the sensor with a multi-meter and tested the integrity of the wires going from the sensor to the ABS ECU.

It is the issue with the VIN number that is really puzzling me. Datatek, I am not sure what I could have done that would have "wiped" part of the flash memory and would be very weary of a product that could be so easily disabled (BBS do not specify any procedure for disconnecting the Faultmate from a vehicle).

I came across a post from someone who appeared to have a similar issue; but he resolved it by sending back the Faultmate and replacing it with a different product.

You would obviously never buy a PC then.
It's not easy to do with the Faultmate but it has been done.
Never disconnect unless it's at the home page and idle.
I've had a Faultmate for some time now with no problems.
 
I have a FCR and have had no problems with it. Don't use it much as i now have Nanocom. Maybe the problem is in your OBDII socket.

With the nano its says always plug the device via the orb , always close any function your in, return to standby mode then switch off
 
Datatek, Having been a Software developer for over 30 years... I have owned (and built) lots of PC's and MACs too :D

Still, I am not necessarily blaming the Faultmate... I am curious as to why I am not reading a VIN number either via the Faultmate or via OBDWiz software linked to an ELMScan 5 Compact...

All said, I don't want to go to the expense of returning a (possibly) non faulty Faultmate...

Because the BECM is not OBD compliant, that kit will not read the VIN as far as I'm aware.
I used to design an manufacture mini computers with our own proprietary operating system, they could be running at full chat with 30 plus terminals and would recover from an instantainious mains failure with no operator intervention.
PC's are crap by comparison, slow and with no capability for covering a mains interuption unless you use a battery back up unit.
