not sure if this has been covered before...? did a search for fault codes but didn't get very far....!
apologies if any of this has been done before...

while trying to work out why my RR p38 wont start i found just a few fault codes on the interweb....

P0300 Random misfire,
P1775 Gearbox fault,
P1178 Rich fuel trim,
P1316 Misfire,
P1117-engine temp sensor
P0335-crank position sensor faulty
p1300-random misfire
p0308-cylinder 8 misfire
p0304-cylinder 4 misfire


please add if you know more

What have you used to read these codes with?

At this age sensor fatigue / failure is reasonable to expect. I'd start by checking / replacing the two engine knock sensors on either bank and then the temp sensor, crank position sensor and the camshaft position sensor (the latter two if failed or detecting a problem will usually prevent the engine from starting at all).

I'd also "service" the induction / ignition system, ie. check / remove and clean the MAF sensor (with a carb cleaner spray), replace the air filter, remove and clean the throttle stepper motor, check / replace spark leads and plugs, use an ohm meter to check the inner and outer winding of the ignition coils, change fuel filter and use a decent injection cleaner additive in the next couple of tanks of petrol. Remember to reset ECU adaptive trims if you do all this and take the car for a couple of long, varied runs. After that if its still showing rich I'd start looking at heated O2 sensors (lambdas) in the exhaust but your diagnostics should give you live feed results so you can check if they are out of range or not switching properly.

Of course this assumes you've already checked for physical air leaks anywhere in the intake which can cause rough idle or misfiring. Fuelling is controlled by the ECU so as long as the injectors are ok and the right signals are being received from all the sensors mentioned this should not need any adjustment.

If you don't already have it, get a copy of RAVE which is the workshop manual and befriend someone nearby who's worked a bit on these cars before.

thanks for your input but maybe i didn't word it right.... this was just a list of fault codes that i found on the internet and not relating to my car...sorry for the confusion....!!!

only put these codes here for anyone's reference....

i still have problems with my car as in it still wont start....? very confused by it all......??? no fault messages on the dash, new battery, spark at the plugs and plenty of fuel at the rail......!!!

Think i just need to get a diagnostics done to find the problem area....?

No you wrote it right but when I read it like that I wondered why on this earth would someone just post a random list of fault codes? Mebbe I'm reading it wrong! You don't need to build your own dictionary of fault codes, a proper diagnostics tool will tell you what's going on. And if you still want to know all the generic OBD II codes there are several hundred lists available on the net.

Yes, get it diagnosed, use some proper kit and not a generic OBD2 reader.
