Hi
Have a Mk1 TD4 on 04 plate. Getting a bit worried as there seems to be a fan running after a run initially occasionally but now every time and its not coming from the radiator fans. The noise seems to be coming from under the battery and steam is coming out from a drain pipe under the car in the same area. The noise runs on for after the engine is turned off for a few minutes. The ac and internal fan are not switched on and there no change in the coolant level.
Any ideas?

sounds like a fuel burner heater , will kick in to warm the engine and cabin up quicker

perfectly normal and think they come on below 5c , if u do a quick search or look in ur owners manual it will tell u all about it

it comes on and off automatically

@Nodge68 is very knowledgeable and if u can fit a timer or remote on the unit

You can turn stop it from running by pulling 1 fuse. However the engine and heater will then run cold. If the thermostat is failing, the FBH will run longer to keep the engine above 75°C.

Hi Nodge68 That answers a whole load of questions. Temp gauge just gets off the stops. Radiator cool all the time. Just checked, a mobile mechanic is supposed to have fitted an top hose thermostat but when I looked no additional jubilee clip or hard swelling in the hose. I have just bent his ear and threatened to damage other parts of his body, I am a former Bootie so I know how, and he is going to give me the stat back and the cash he took from me. I will get a local garage to do the job for me. Again many thanks
