I've got a 2005 freelander with 2 electrical gremlins
1st the lower brake lights have decided to stop working bulbs are okay all other lights work Inc the top brake light
2nd when put in reverse the sensors just give a long beep the light flashes on the button and don't beep when you put your ear to them one of them don't click when weather is hot they work fine
Are these 2 faults likely to be related? If not what would cause lower brake lights not to work?

Do the rear side lights work ok ? And I'll assume you have checked the bulbs are correct wattage for their location ...

If any of the brake lights work we'll assume that the switch is fine ...

Could be a bad earth or a chafed wire ... Do the indicators work ok too ?

Yes all other lights work they were working one day then not the next all bulbs are okay the top ( oval) brake light works nothing had changed on the car

Try cleaning the sensors first, the long beep usually means it thinks it's within 12" of a solid object ...
If your rear sensors has a fault the orange light on the switch will flash... to change the sensor you have to take off your rear mud guards, (if fitted)
The back half of the rear wheel arch trim to expose screws, then take off the top rear light again to expose more screws, then you can take off the bumper.
If you have a Haynes manual that will tell you how to do it.

If your HIGH LEVEL brake light is working the problem could be due to corrosion caused by water ingress at the connectors behind lamps...
Use a test lamp with someone pressing pedal if all else fails.
"All brake lights come from a yellow header joint C291,( Illustrated in Electrical Library Manual ) located behind right/hand rear trim panel close to seat belt reel above R/H rear shock absorber mounting."
If 1 light is working ( obviously fuse is ok, ) you should be able to trace circuit between this connector and the connectors to lamps, ( hope you have checked for corrosion at lamp connectors, as they are exposed to salt etc. I don't know if Elect Library is available on the RAVE disc, if so you can see the connector photo location for yourself.

Yes the light flashes only one not clicking

Yes I've had bulbs put all holders etc clean good contacts just strange how one day all 3 lights work next day only one works

Hi Rooster,

I've got exactly the same problem with my parking sensors - they won't work when wet. I suspect someone has power washed them and blown a seal. I tried to put some Captain Tolleys crack sealer silicone fluid into the possible leak points on a nice warm dry day when they were working, but as soon as it rained they konked again. It's my outer one that's packed up and you can get your hand behind it through the light aperture but I'm not sure how to release the plastic retaining clip at that point. I'm sure you can probably pop out the outer ones without undoing the bumper etc if you can work out how those clips work when your'e working blind. New ones cost buttons so removing half the back end seems a lot of effort if it can be done without ! Has anyone attempted this ?
