Come wind, sand, sun, rain or snow, I use a £14.99 Camping Gaz single burner. the little ones with the CV470 bottles or whatever they are. Don't need any more than that in my opinion!

I would try to convert you to a coleman duel fuel burner. I had one of them camping gaz burners once upon a time, cook on a coleman and you will be converted for yourself..!
 
another vote for the CampingGaz single burner (although only used in the UK) we have two and has been fine with everything we've used on it.

I've also found you dont have to clean them as much and two store nicely together top and tailed.

Also gas refills very cheap.
 
Agree with the RUSTYRHINOS on this one; done quite a few trips around w/euro and brought initially MSG DRAGONFLY multi-fuel thingy off fleabay, wasn't go to pay silly money for a new one, and a single burner gas cooker (also has a cylinder type thing that locks into the top of the ring burner which acts as a heater, and it throws out shed loads of heat) which takes the little ones with the CV470 bottles.

And yeap, the DRAGONFLY still in it's box, the single burner we found is more than enough; my 110 came with a twin burner attached to the rear door, which is very useful if you have more than 3 people or more than 1 female :rolleyes: they like their saucepans don't they. :)

Anytime I've been camping, it's been the Campingaz 270 twister. Does the job, no probs. Just clip it onto a gas can and yer off.
 
Problem with the twist ons is that once their 'on' they're no until they're finished. That's why I got an MSR Pocket Rocket which is awesomely fast and having burned can be undone from the canister and put back in its carry box after about a minute - it takes up about the space of two packets of cigarettes and in 10 weeks of using it a minimum of five days a week I've used two canisters - I brought 8 with me.

I cook on it using some nice efficient MSR black aluminium pots and most importantly it makes the coffee in around 90 seconds with our Italian stovetop expresso maker.

I also have a Cadac No.7 which lasts for ever - with the safari kit although haven't used it much on this trip. Going to see if I can get it refilled in Kigali tomorrow.

I also have two braai grids - one square and one for toasting two sandwiches which can also do fish or a couple of steaks.

Then of course there's the potjie - can't travel Africa without it.

It'll always be a BBQ for me bein' an Englishman but for sure - love cooking but don't eat much but can drink my weight...
 
Being a seasoned camper i have a few cookers. From the very small but rubbish hex-amine cooker upto a full size Cadac carry chef.

I keep a trangia with gas attachment in the back of the 90 with a big kettle and use it for brews (wets) and noodles. However given the chance i set up the cadac and ruin loads of perfectly good food - BBq, bake, roast, boil, fry, you name it the cadac can ruin food in a number of ways.
 
lol... was watching live feed thingy and saw loads of 'kak praat' suddenly...
all i carry is a trangia 27-2 and a portable braai / bbq of the toolbox variety... this does me and the missus sweet food all the time. cadac is just for burning stuff and making things taste funny!

maybe one day we can all have a lekker landyzone braai and the 'jaapies' can show u u how to make some 'lekker' food on the bbq...

space for the cadac carri chef, if you dont have space make space,thats def what ill be bringing with me,
as for the oven i think thats a bit over board and should be more usefull in a caravan for roasting pigeons,i think the oven part is way too small for any sort of reasonable use.

I think the oven is way tooooooooo big, you can roast in the carri chef !

I'm taking a carri chef, and a two burner stove, and maybe a folding single burner petrol burner as backup. That way I can always have a coffee, even if the gas runs out :D

On the carri chef, the one pictured at towsure is the 2008 model, it has huge holes in the lid and I can't see how you could get a decent roasting temperature. You want the 2009 model which looks like this :

You can get it here at the same price as towsure Cadac Carri Chef Deluxe or maybe towsure just haven't updated their pic and do stock the 2009 model, but you should check.

The Afrikaans code :D For us Durbanites it is like a secret code ;)

There is a shop not 5 minutes from here that makes biltong, 5 types of wors, sells klippies, OBS, Hunters Gold, Nyala Maize Meal, 5 flavours of aromat, freshly masde koesisters, sosaties, even potjie pots. In fact friends from SA said they had not even seen so much South African stuff in SA. :D Dublin is a fair drive though !

I have the pre 2009 model holes holes in the roasting lid and it still get way hot enough to roast. For a chicken, veg and tatty's to feed 4 you need 10mins of pre heating at full heat with lid on, followed by 2.5 hrs at medium heat with the food in situ. No probs with older model.... Roasts great. Also very good for cooking part baked rolls which keep stored for ages.

I appreciate a roast dinner might not be on the normal menu for overlanders but seeing the envy in other campers is well worth the effort.

P.s. The cool camping cook book has some great camp food ideas and is an inspiration, especially if you are the lazy type and live off Ration packs...lol.
