Hi all.
Had a few defenders now but have now brought myself a 2004 td5.
My 1st question is my remotes don't work. They both light up and if I open the door the alarm goes off when the key has been in the ignition a while it will start and when key is in the ignition the red light on the key flashed?

My 2nd question is I have a hi/low stick in the car and a sticker to suggest I can select different lock but I have no side ways movement?
 
Regarding your second question first, depending on the year and version of your D2, you probably don't have a Centre Differential Lock (CDL) fitted so the Hi/Lo T-box lever will only move forward and backward. The D2 depends on the Traction Control system, which is very good apparently instead of the CDL. The labelling can be a bit confusing, but it seems that Land Rover used what labels they had instead of going out to source new ones.
Regarding your entry problems. First question, "Do you have the Emergency Key Access (EKA) code?
If both your fobs have stopped working, I would be tempted to replace the RF receiver for the system first, or at least check it for moisture ingress it's in the roof space, just forward of the rear sunroof.
@neilly is a real authority on the D2 security system.

Assuming it is a Discovery 2 from the title.
Ref the diff lock as @brian47 has already said, my 53 plate D2 is the same, badge inside on console shows diff lock, but it is not there. if you remove the lever cover you will see there is no way the lever could move sideways.

Also as has been said, have you got your EKA code?

You say the fobs light up, so the doors do not unlock when you press the fob buttons?
So you have to unlock with the key in the drivers door lock.
When you open the drivers door the alarm goes off.
What is the little red led on the dash doing?
You say if you leave the key in the ignition it will start? how long? again what is the led on the dash doing? is the alarm still going off at this point?

OK, I know it sounds a bit daft, but when I first bought my D2, I fell into the same trap.
Which button are you using to open the vehicle? On the D2 fobs, the oval button with the LR logo on it opens the vehicle and the smaller round button is used to lock the doors.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm "teaching my granny to suck eggs", but as I said, nobody showed me and it did catch me out.

Well one button had a picture of a padlock on it so I assume that's the lock and the other is the unlock lol

Unfortunately I have no paper work as Brought it salvage. If I unlock the door manually the alarm goes off.. if I put the key in the ignition and turn it on the little red light on the key starts to flash... the big red light on the dash also flashes. After about 20 seconds the big one on the dash goes off and I'm able to start it

Well , that is a new one on me.

So when you unlock manually key in drivers door, the alarm goes off, you sit in the car and put key in ignition after the little led flashes and then you can start it, ALL while the alarm is sounding off.

It's a new one on me too. D8 seems to be talking about two different red lights, the one on the key and the one he calls the big one is the LED on the dashboard I presume.
Now some more questions, first to @neilly.
  1. What can make the little LED on the key fob flash?
  2. I know it comes on when it's transmitting to the car for lock and unlock, but does it flash when it's trying to sync with the system on the car?
  3. Or is this something which might be a pointer?
And now to @d8moa.
  1. Have you actually tried the EKA sequence to disarm the immobiliser and gain full access?
  2. How do you lock the vehicle, I know you can't use the fob to open it?
I'm still drawn to a faulty RF receiver unit.

Q1, No freaking idea,....LOL...:D...never seen or read about this anywhere. Unless it is some type of low battery warning. ( but that is normally given by the dash LED) How you see the fob flash when it is in the ignition I do not know. @d8moa , how do you see the fob flash?

First thing i would do, which @brian47 suggested at the beginning , find your EKA code,

You can get this a number of ways:
get it from the local LR dealer with proof of ownership.
Get it online by paying £20.
( both of these are OK, as long as someone has not changed the code)
Find someone with a nanocom ( other diagnostics may do it ) and have them read the code from the car.

It is still strange why your fob flashes and it is capable of starting after 20 secs of waiting.


I would suggest you need diagnostics on it .

Check the lever and see if that has left right marked on it, if so, it may just be seized due to lack of use.

If it is you will need to soak in oil

It's conceived as to do that if you keep the button depressed more that 3 seconds.... it's normal, try that yourself... if it keeps flashing after the button was released it might be a sign of sticking microswitch/button, it's not uncommon for the microswitch to get stuck closed if the casing is not genuine cos the plastic cover doesnt "jump" back instantly, then the led will flash exactly like when the button is depressed if you see what i mean
 
Well I have done a small video which I will upload later
But a quick brief is I unlock with the key the alarm goes off and big red led on dash flashes... key in and on position 2 and the led on the key flashes too... after about a min both lights stop and I am able to start to looks like there talking to each other so it knows it can start! Ideally I'd rather have the remotes working rather then turn all my security off with the EKA code thing

Just to verify @sierrafery s point, on my fob it flashes if you hold the key down for more than approx 2 secs , you have to be holding it to cause this. Can you try removing the internal board.

press the button on the electronic circuit board to unlock / get in put key in ignition with the fob close to the key and see if the led still flashes.

This will take out the question of a dodgy fob case causing the led to flash.

Although I would be very surprised if a dodgy fob case caused the light to flash at the same time and place every time.

Using the EKA would allow you to be able to start and run the car and make sure that diagnostics can check the vehicle. Plus that all settings are set correctly, from that a proper investigation can take place.

Without this, it is a case of guessing in the dark. Which is OK if you like spending money on changing components and paying to have them programmed to the vehicle if necessary.

Unlocking with the key will activate the alarm, that's standard as the alarm system has voltage drop sensing.
As for the large red LED on, the factory fitted LED fitted within the dash display is only around 5mm so hardly large, do u have something like a large Jumbo LED fitted somewhere and still the factory fitted security system?

I think that we've already established that the "large" led is the one on the dashboard. In this case the term "large" is relative to the "small" one on the key fob. I'm pretty sure that there are no other bigger lights involved in this story. :D
 
I'm just trying to remember how our Son's D2 works. He has an issue too, but he can work around it.

If you open the car manually with the key, the alarm will sound. If you plip the alarm button on the key to unlock the central locking first, THEN use the key manually, it is all OK, so I think it is a fault with the driver's door lock. The lock itself won't open via central locking, and this lock has the switch inside?

Does that match?

It can be - the letters will correspond to numbers greater than 9, so A=10, B=11 etc. Which could be a lot of key turning!
