hi all lm new here l sort of stumbled across this forum while trying to find a rear diff for my freelander (1.8 petrol r reg) anyway l found a diff but on the way back l heard a bang from the engine drove another 5 or 6 miles at 90mph but when l slowed down to come off at my junction the car stopped, l was towed and have been told from 2 different garages the engines dead but l was also told a rover218i engine would fit with slight modifications then l was told it wouldnt it had to be a rover 75 anyone got any ideas or am l fighting a losing battle with the freelander (bought private sale week ago n taking him to small claims court grrr)
thanks all
90mph

and a further 5-6miles, thats 5000rpm plus
Did the garage tell you exactly what was wrong with the engine?
If was something coming off the timing belt or tensioner, then you might just need a new head, not the full engine.
Rover engine is a straight swap, you'll get a good one for a couple of hundred squid. lotus have the same engine in the elise, only its tuned to the hilt, expect to pay more for these.
The sump might have to be switched from the old engine. This is because not all k-series sumps have the holes for the IRD bracket.
Make sure its the same year of manufacture, what is an R reg????
Two variants, of the 1.8 k-series in the Freelander,
MEMS 1.9 up to late 2000, MEMS 3.0 after that..........basically MEMS 1.9 has the distributor (dizzy) cap, MEMS 3 has the coil packs and associated sensors.
there is a MEMS 2J but thats for the VVC engine, you could fit one of these as well, but you'll have to swap the ECU and wiring looms. If revving is your thing you'll be smiling non-stop with your hippo revving to 7500rpm
Lotus also had their own ECU for their engines
