Any one confirm that a 200tdi runs hotter than a 2.5n/a ??

I mean that it is designed to run hotter

This would explain why my gauge shows the 200 tdi running warm when it isn't. I have put a 19J sender in the 200tdi and the gauge is defender which was running with the old 2.5n/a

I assume that the gauge thinks that its still a 2.5n/a and that the engine is starting to overheat when in fact the engine is normal temp for a 200tdi.

I also swapped the gauge to check and left the centre earth wires off and both gauges went into the red and beyond, what do these earth wires do to affect the reading? ok when put back:)

might just buy a gauge with matching sender, whats the thread size anyone 5/8 unf ??
 
Earth is very important. If the gauge earths to the bulkhead, check bulkhead is earthed to chassis. And that earthing points are clean for good contact.

It was all working fine with 2.5n/a

200tdi engine sends temp gauge to three quarters instead of half

I have put new 19J temp sender in and its the same

I have put 2.5 n/a sender unit back which matches the gauge and its still the same.

As there are no numbers on the gauge I assume that the gauge shows cold normal and hot rather than actual temperatures.

Is the gauge calibrated to the engine rather than the sender i.e. put a hotter running engine in and the gauge will read hot rather than the 80 odd degrees putting the needle in the normal bit:)
 
With the probable exception of modern ecm controlled engines (where the gauges are driven by the senders but through the ecm so the ecm tells the gauge what to read) all senders tend to work over a standard resistance range and the gauges are matched to them. There are 2 different sets of resistances, euro and US. Get them wrong and the gauges tend to read backwards. Gauge and Instrument Senders and Fittings

So, it shouldn't really matter that the sender and gauge come from different engines. You could put a fuel gauge on a temperature sender and it should still read properly although the numbers obviously wouldn't make sense.

The obvious conclusion is that, yes a 200tdi does run hotter than a 19J. Assuming of course that everything is working properly.

Which would make the defender 2.5 gauge read differently as the 2.5 sender is sending hotter signals to the defender gauge, it doesn't know that its been fitted to a 200tdi block

I would try it with 200tdi gauge and 200 sender if you know the engine is not that hot. With any engine conversion I run the sender and gauge for that engine. I usually stick a capillary (mechanical) gauge in as well, with the sender in the top rad hose.

Haven't got a 200 defender gauge unless its the same as 19J gauge ??

I have put the sender off the old engine back in and it still reads a lot hotter on the gauge than the old engine did, 200 is running ok according to laser temp thingy so it should read normal on the gauge as the old one did.

But then if the 200 is hotter running then the sender will pick that up and gauge will be higher.

So the gauge is never going to be right even though its the correct sender for the gauge......am I right:confused:
 
There are IIRC three different guages used in the 90/110 /defender upto TD5 . They require the matching sender or will give erroneous readings . If you are using the 19j sender with the oe 19j guage then if located in same place it should give the right temp reading , fitting T pieces and certain adapters can cause some errors esp if air can get trapped around the probe . The different engines will run all things being equal at the temp controlled by the thermostat , so you will get say a 19j with a 74c stat giving a lower reading than a 200tdi with an 88c stat . HTSH

That's the problem I have only the other way round.

200tdi reading high on the temp gauge as it runs hotter

So must need Defender 200tdi sender if gauges are the same and not 19J sender which will always show hotter
 
no you need the 200tdi sender and guage . or just realise that the position higher on the guage , (as long as its not in red section ) is its "normal" position .

I have exactly opposite with a V8 sender and guage showing the running temp of a TD6 diesel (low) LOL

Defender 200tdi gauge must be different to 19J gauge though they look the same.
They are advertised as fitting all Defenders but that must be wrong.

Think I'll go the aftermarket sender and gauge to match route showing actual figures instead of coloured spaces. Got to be better than guessing and buying senders:rolleyes::)

Pull it apart and bend the needle so it sits in the middle:D
