Hello guys

I plan to change the engine oil soon on my Td5 and I would like to ask your opinion, experience on what grade of oil should I use. Manual says 5W40, local LR repair shop uses 10W40 semi synth and I have also red that the best is 5W30 (ACEA A1/B1).
Also, what is the experience on filters? Genuine LR or other type (like for example Mahle) also ok?

I use 5W 30, again a recommendation. Despite 10W40 being more than enough for the UK's cold temps, the 5 will still flow easier when cold, exactly when you need it on start up

I intend doing oil & filter changes every 6000 rather than 12 (including the centrifugal filter & the fuel filter), so I'm not too bothered about branded filters. Saying that, Cooper & Fram have been making filters for donkeys years as have Mahle.

We run our D2 V8 on 10W-40 semi-synthetic diesel oil, change engine oil and filter around 10k miles, although it is still clear at that mileage.

I never got sold on 5W oils, prefer something heavier.

Thanks for the recommendations!
As far as i know last oil change was done by using semi-synth Castrol 10w40. I have experienced about 0.5-1l oil consumption within 10k kms (no leak, no smoke).
I guess if i use full synth 5w30 it could be even more, right?

Could be as a 30 SAE grade oils viscosity will be thinner than a 40 grade.

Which grade you use? I have tried to find something which fullfills the spec written in the manuals (ACEA A1, B1) but in 10w40 viscosity range there is nothing. I have found it only 5w30 full synthetic which meets this spec.
In 10w40 range I found only ACEA B3, B4. These have higher HTHS viscosity.

I have a td5 engine and use "standard" diesel. Was it your question?

As I see a Td5 so how can choosing a grade of engine oil be so difficult? Why not stick Mobil 1 in and be done.
All the major oil companies have a search facility for suitable oils, with some all u have to do is enter your reg number, simples.

I always use the runniest oil that is on the list of recomended viscosities, so that would be the 5W/30.

I had a nasty experience running a mondeo 2.2TDCI on 10W/40. Recomended bY Ford and Haynes for the car, but it was too thick for the turbo bearings and killed the engine one july morning. First thing the Mechanic who did the post-mortem told me was that I should have use the thinner oil.

Land Rover recommends ACEA A1, B1 which is only available in 5W30. My concern is the high temp during summer here in Hungary which exceeds 30C many times. From this point of view the best would be 5W40 (or 10W40) but there is no oil in A1 B1 grade (only B3, B4).
Maybe I make this more complecated as it should be...?

use Castrol Edge 5W40 Diesel...it's specially engineered for unit injector(PD) engines like the Td5... that's what i use in the same meteo conditions

Think you will find all TDCI engines require 5Wxx due to the machining tolerances on camshaft,cam followers etc 10 W xx oil is too thick and does not get in - hence failure.(well documented)
I apply the same logic to my TD5,and always go with 5Wxx

Thanks, I think this is going to be my choice as well. Even it is not available in ACEA B1 (or B5) only in B3, B4 but it still can be used according to workshop manual.

Well I need to service mines and due to locality and availability (And the fact I'm a tight arse) It comes down to one of these three.
But which would you guys recommend?? Mines a TD5 2003 plate std map.
I've always had petrol motors till now.

Oil is not the place for being a tight arse. A engine is several thousand quid. To save 3-4 quid that is not the place to do it,
