All Land Rover engine numbers are stamped in, the raised numbers are casting numbers, usually part numbers.
The attached image is a 2.5 N/A diesel, but the number should be in the same place, towards the rear of the engine on a flat area.
Yours should start 17H or similar then five numbers and ending with a letter.
It is where the arrow is, to the rear of the distributor, ignore the plate that is circled.

Found it!! Thank you both so very much. The engine number was hidden under a few layers of grime and I began to think it just wasn't there. Thanks for getting help and guidance; may never have found that sucker otherwise.
