we have a freelander 1.8 and the engine cooler fan is now on almost all the time the engine is running with the temperature guage going hot and cold intermittently. previously it only went on after a long journey. can anyone tell me what this is?

are ya loosin coolant? if not could be yer engine thermostat needs replacement. . . .

cooler/water bottle was empty but as shops closed today is it ok to make do with water only for the time being?

preferably distilled (but not on a lr)

SERIOUS, check yer dipstick for milky smeggy oil, check yer oil fill cap, check yer bank balance...check any threads for HGF or head gasket failure, don't wanna scare ya, but sounds like another one for landy's stats....

It could just be something as simple as the radiator cap.
Unscrew the cap and screw a diesel engine to it
