Hi everyone, has any body had any dealings with regards to curing rust caused by electrolysis?

On my 110 solid back landy I seem to have rust on both sides roughly in the same position, the rust is just bellow the riveted aluminum panel, where it meets the rear wings.

Some body told me to use anti electrolysis paint or zink paint to stop the reaction between the aluminum and the steel.

Can you advise me which to use, and where i might be able to get it from and weather I have to paint the whole body and chassis with it.

Yer really need to strip the paint off all the parts and spray them with etch primer then paint as normal. The reason it's corroding is cos the two dissimilar metals, steel and ally, are touching and they create an electrolytic action which corrodes mainly the ally, this is worse if they get wet. So if you stop the two parts touching or keep them dry then you'll stop the corrosion.

Do I need a specific primer or under coating, to stop the reaction?

UPDATE.

Ive searched the net and have found the ETCH primer, I have also read that the etch primer is suitable for both aluminum and steel.

Etch primer, It's an acid based paint an it etches into the ally. You can get it from most body shop supplies ask for "etch primer" or "acid etch primer".

Will I have to give the whole body a fair few coats or just the ally?

Depends on how far your stripping the paint back. It's realy for bare metal, ally or steel, that int to say you can't use it on already painted surfaces. An you only need one coat.

Well im going for a complete restore on me Landy so a new coat of paint is gonna be sprayed onto her, just want to cure the rust once and for all.

So this etch primer can still be painted onto a already painted surface, and ive not gotta waste hours of time and skin on me knuckles rubbing the fooker down to bare metal.

I'd spray the bare bits with etch primer an then go over the lot with an ornery primer.

well I suppose im gonna have to experiment, treat the areas which has signs of rust where the ally meets the steel with etch primer, then blow the reat of the body with normal primer.

This is becoming to be a bigger job than I first imagined, but it needs to be done if I want to cure the rust.

Suppose I will have to evaluate the extent of the rust/rot when I get Landy striped down even more.
