I have just bought a N reg 300 tdi disco with electrical faults. 1, Battery goes flat after 4 days its a New battery. 2, When using any control ,eg Indicators, main beam, or brakes the speedo goes off . Can anyone help me .
Thanks
I would start by checking all the earths are ok, and then look for a short somewhere. Downloading RAVE from Green Oval will give you the sites of all the earths, complete with pics to help find them. Has anyone added any accessories or had any trim apart and used screws that are too long, cutting into and bridging any circuits? or spliced into a circuit and either not insulated it properly or used the power from one circuit and earth from another?
I'll be interested to see how this develops, as i'm having a similar problem, battery doesn't go flat yet, but when i use the indicator the speedo dips and the radio goes off!!
If there is nothing extra, it could be a poor repair to something existing, probably either in the column or instrument area, given the items you've listed.
I suspected the indicator stalk on mine, but now, the radio goes off if i hit a pothole etc. Looking like a dodgy earth or connection. Also when i used the windscreen washer stalk, the radio goes off also. Something else i have noticed is when i use the indicators, the radio display dims.
Definitely check the earths ... and also check the handbrake cable. Sounds a bit odd, but if an earth goes, the hb cable is often touching the body/chassis/engine closely enough that it becomes an earth point. If it gets real bad it can screw up allsorts of systems, and can even burn, smells like the clutch is slipping ..
Bloody hell! Thanks for that info Paul, I seem to remember when i put the handbrake on, the blower speeded up a bit and the dash lights brightened a little. Hope that's my prob.
As said above check all the earths. The one I would start with is the main body earth behind the battery, looks like a cable clamp on the main black earth cable
holding the cable to the inner wing top.
Next would be the two earths behind the front footwell side panels, one earth each side. They look like a bolt coming thro the metal panel with a lot of black wires connected to them.
Disconnect the earths ,clean contact surfaces to bright metal, smear with vaseline and re-assemble.
If you cba to check too much, a quick fix for when it gets warmer/easier to work on, you could use some Jump lead cable to make your own earth straps .. either crimp ends onto decent sized ring terminals and bolt 'em to chassis/engine, chassis/body, chassis/battery.
Cheap, simple quick fix .. just remember to do them properly.
As a quick check to see if it is 'just' an earthing problem, you could also just use the jump leads crocodile clipped between same places ... might give you an idea of where to go next ..
