I have a electric cable with a black pin connector just in front of the cubby box and behind the gear stick that i dont know what its for, the reason im asking is that i have ordered a eberspacher d2 heater and was wondering if this would do for a connection from the unit to the 110.

I dont know if it is relevant but this defender 110 td5 2004 is an ex mod vehicle, so i always figured it may have been a connection for a radio or something, but as i say this is my first fender and im not sure if this connection point is in all fenders.

Do you know when some one says something to you and you think, god, thats really obvious, why the hell didnt i think of that - well thats just what happened. LOL. Just going to pop out and have a look, thanks for keeping me right on this one mate.

But if anyone has an ex mod 110 with this in it or a ex squaddie who might know about it, i will be interested to hear from you.

Can't tell you what it is, but if you're right about it being for a radio or something similar, be careful when connecting other stuff - need to know the current drain - suspicion is the eberspacher might draw somewhat more than say a 5 amp radio feed!

Yeah, thats what i was thinking! Cant see where the cable goes to just now as it runs under the cubby box and i take it, then under the floor of the 110, its ****ing it down just now outside, so dont fancy crawling under the fender in the rain, i know im a pussy LOL. Just going to take off the cubby box just now to confirm it goes under the floor, well if i can suss out that as well, i have removed 2 screws under the cup holders, theres also a bolt, but that just keeps turning so i take it theres a nut underneath, hope its not under the floor or its getting wet time Lol.

How thick is the wire? colour? is there just the one wire going into the connector?

Very good LOL. Im really getting what owning a 110 is about, i think i must take things apart more than i drive it, when opening the door each time, ive usually got a screwdriver in my hand LOL and whats worse is that usually theres nothing wrong with it, i keep getting great ideas about upgrading it and that involves taking the damn thing apart. I reckon i have actually rebuilt it, but damn its good fun :)

OK guys, curiosity got the better of me and i donned my waterproofs and under the 110 i went, the cable runs under the landy and straight into the central loom running the length of the landy so cant see where it runs too.

Im really a novice when its comes to car electrics, so any advice would be welcome on how i find out if this cable would be suitable for my eberspacher unit.

If you have a multimeter (or 12 v bulb and a bit of wire)

Firstly is it live all the time or ignition switched?

If it has power to it, if you remove a fuse (behind gear lever) one at a time, does pulling any fuse see it lose power?

If yes, what is the current rating of that fuse? What other circuits does that fuse control?

Personally I'd be happier taking a new fused feed straight from the battery, using the appropriate fuse and cable thickness for the currrent the heater draws

Thanks for that, never even dreamed it would be for that.

I will take the good advice offered here and take it straight from the battery then.

If anyone could talk me through how to do this i would really appreciate it and remember that when your doing this for me, please be cruel as you want and consider me a simpleton LOL and give me as much info and detail in a blow by blow manner as possible, including all the parts needed, where to get them and how to join the circuit together.

Not the best picture or neatest job, but may help

Blade fuses and cable available in differnt current ratings from Halfords or most car parts suppliers


In your circuit presumably you'd want a switch (and possibly a relay again depending on current draw) - unless the unit itself is switched and is OK to have a permanent live feed

Yep thanks for that, i just had the idea of phoning the defender centre, where i got it from and he confirmed it was a diagnostic plug.

Many thanks for all the help in getting to the bottom of this as ive always wondered what that pin connector was for, and thanks for the photo, i will give it a bash and hopefully not blow the 110 up :D
