I've heard that the later TD5 engines are better but what goes wrong with the early engines to give them the bad rep?

Thanks very much for the compliment, i've heard of major engine failures on some other forums due to a fault with the head but this could be completely false. I know about the oil pump bolt coming loose but none of the failures were due to this apparently. There is 2 different engine codes for the TD5 so they must have done something
