hey ya. I was under the landy other day and came across this dust cap (refers to link below) I think its damaged, am certain shouldn't be in two parts. What actually is this bit for? Its next to the t-box. Is it part of the handbrake drum?

that would be the handbrake cable mate. If i were u i'd leave it. Its not gunna really matter an aweful lot. To change it you would have to strip down the drum brake from the other side. Pretty simple to get apart same as a normal drum brake on a car really. If you do it then do the paper seal at the back there as well they always leak.

so that dust cap is fine to leave as it is? what role does it play exactly in where its located. ie would dust in the drum be a problem?

The defender hand brake has built in tolerance in that no matter what gets in there, or doesn't, it's still crap...

edit: nb. this is not advice

there a pain in the ass to fit right ( well I find anyway ) - part number is - 515466 .
If you want one , all it does is stop ( try to ) stop **** getting into the brake expander .
