Hi

Anybody had a DMF fail on a TD4 Freelander, what were the symptoms and what mileage did it happen at? The word is that the DMF is pretty much bomb proof and I am weighing up whether to swap it with the clutch or not.

How many miles you got on it? And if you enjoy doing that over again, I would change it (dmf) at the same time. It could trash out your new parts if DMF let lose. AsK James Martin about that part. But my thinking is do it once, do it right
 
Change the lot, a DMF costs less than the labour to disassemble the whole system again
 
Change it and stop being tight. You will be ****ed off if you break down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and freezing cold in a years time because your dmf has exploded with no warning and taken out your gearbox at the same time.
Then you will need a new clutch too... Pretty pointless if you ask me

Ses88 converted to a single mass. Could do with an update.........

The single mass :decision: dual mass flywheel debate continues!
 
If it were me and money was tight I would prefer to put a solid flywheel kit in than leave the dual mass in there.

I have done plenty of conversions on 1.9 tdi skoda octavia's when I was working on a local taxi firms cabs. They didn't have any issues and cabbies ain't the most delicate of types!
 
I changed the clutch at 180,000 miles and didn't change the DMF. My mechanic said it was in good condition so i decided to risk it. I've heard plenty warnings, but very little about them actually failing. 40k done since and no sigh of any trouble yet.

ps change the DMF,if it breaks it can destroy your gearbox.i had to change mine on my audi a6.glad i did as it was in the process of breaking up.:screaming_bug_eye_f

Gonna bring this little thread back to life!
My TD4 has developed a knock when I depress the clutch pedal which I can both hear and feel through the pedal. It seems to be at the same rate as the revs. Also sounds like I've got 2 diesel engines under the bonnet...
From what I have read on this forum and on others, sounds like my DMF is about to be KIA. Would I be right in thinking this?
With parts and labour, am I looking at about £700-£800? :eek:
 
I put a Valeo solid flywheel conversion and a Tazu metal slave cylinder in mine (well, SWMBOs) last week for £600 plus whatever it cost for new synthetic oil in the IRD and gearbox which I don't remember.
It seems to work well.
