my car arrived today, needs a new engine, however if you let go of the gearstick it immediately moves to the left instead of staying in the centre. The gearstick won't move further than half way across so can't select 3rd or reverse? seems like its the selector rod/cables (not sure what this car uses) needs adjusting. Is this a common problem and what is the cure?

I will probably buy that, is that going to tell me how to solve this problem though? as that what im really looking for.

Probably buy it? You just bought a P38 Range Rover with part of the engine in the boot, I would suggest the workshop manual is an essential purchase!

Looking at the diagrams for the selector mechanism on the R380 it looks like there is a possibility it could be a broken part in there, but my experience with gear selection mechanisms and 'boxes only goes as far as a Series III box so I couldn't help you further. The manual doesn't have a trouble shooting section (that I could find) but does have a comprehensive rebuild section.

If you think about it, it could be a very nasty gearbox fault.
You bought the car with a knackered engine as it had sucked in some water, if when it happened it was in gear driving along and the engine stopped very suddenly, the wheels were still trying to go round, driving the propshafts, transfer box, and gearbox so it could be something inside the box has broken, something has to give.

When you get the engine out, try turning the shaft (in the bell housing) and then select the gears, or feel for nastyness when you turn the shaft.

yeh i see what your getting at, is there any adjustment anywhere at all? the fact it lops to one side is the same as when a shifter in a clio is badly adjusted and can't select the end 2 gears.

Right it must be an adjustment problem. the reason the shifter isn't moving over allowing me to select 5th or reverse is because the gears been selected are in fact 3rd 4th 5th and reverse. and 1st and 2nd arnen't there. As i said when you let go of the knob is lops over to the left which is actually selecting 3rd and 4th where you would normally select 1st and seconds, So its definitely an adjustment issue.
