For some time now iv'e had an intermitant fault on my 1997 dse, there is no pattern that i can see to the problem, it can happen after a short or a long journey, the fuel tank appears to be venting diesel into the o/s rear wheel arch, it don't seem to matter if the tank is full or empty and the only thing iv'e noticed is that sometimes when i take the filer cap off there appears to be a build up of pressure in the tank, anyone got any idea's ?

Should not be any pressure in the tank. There is a vent valve on top of the tank and an hose that goes to the filler neck. Inside the tank there is a one way flap that is supposed to stop fuel swilling back up the filler neck. I am sure there should be a vent hole in the cap check for that. Otherwise if you have a leak in the filler neck or joints you can get much better access to check them if you remove the O/S arch liner.

thanks wammers, iv'e got some time off in the week, so will drop the arch liner and have a look, with the liner out of the way, will i be able to see the vent pipe that go's to the filler neck?

Yes but you won't get near the valve on the tank itself. Check the connection from filler neck to tank sometimes they weep as the rubber cracks. With the liner off you can see the filler neck and pipe going onto it from tank vent.

No hole in the filler cap, direct venting was banned some time ago.

Maybe the one on top of the tank is one way then, allows air in but not out. In that case then there maybe pressure in the tank at some stage as fuel is constantly taken out and returned warmed to tank. There are two breathers one large diameter from lift pump to filler neck for filling and one small diameter plastic tube from top of tank that also goes up to filler neck via a push in connector on pipe from tank. If he is getting pressure, which now maybe seems normal then he has a split or badly connected pipe somewhere.
