I can see no reason for getting a 2wd it'd unless yu wish to con a prospective buyer. Go for a 4wd version and leave prop off.

I think they only do the 2wd drive one for a couple of reasons,

1, as you say to con people into the "oh it's a 2wd version"..
2, so they have spare hypoid gears and output shafts..

Or am I just being cynical?

Prospective Buyer's Guide...

1) If there's no props, but there is a reciept for a recon 2WD IRD with blanking plate at time of sale - the IRD is good (previso its not from FreelanderIrdSpecialists!)

2) If there's no props and a rear drive pinion or blanking plate (without recon reciept) - the IRD is shafted.

3) If there are props, and it sounds ****e - the IRD is shafted.

4) If there are props, but it sounds good - the IRD will be shafted shortly

I think you have to be pretty dumb to fit a '2wd' IRD. You do realise you can fit a regular IRD and not connect a propshaft...? At least then someone could have the option of fitting the propshaft and a proper VCU. Now you have ruined that possibility and invalidated your insurance, and whoever buys it after you. You have told the insurance company about this major modification, haven't you?

In general, do people really understand what makes a Freelander (or any car) work anyway? Most people wouldn't know what an IRD was or what looked right or wrong. You only need to look at the questions raised on this forum to know people generally haven't got a clue. If they turn the key and it starts, drives, there's no puddles of anything accumulating under it and the tyres have got tread on - then its OK!

Probably the only people who might be fooled/tricked by the appearance are those that would have done thier homework anyway and can identify what's right or wrong. Lets face it, if the car's got props you only need to jack a wheel up and see if it turns easily to work out whether there's a gear missing in the IRD or the fluid's been drained from the VCU. If its not got props but has a rear drive pinion, turn it and see if its connected!

I could easily be wrong, but I recon that's probably the long and short of it.
