is it a p38? if so, i am assuming it isnt working on the central locking, take out the small screws, carefully, and fiddle with the little motor inside. you can connect the plug to the car and test it for function. this is the easiest way i have found to get em back working!!!

Which vehicle are we talking about here. Classic RR is a sealed unit, P38 can be taken apart but dont know of anyone who has gone down this route. It's normally either a failed spring or the motor that wears out, most people just replace the unit as a whole.

sorry, yeah its a p38. Both front laches wernt working when i bought the car about 2 months ago replaced both with second hand ones all fine then drivers door started playing up and has now died. It unlocks off the central locking but wont lock also wont signal the central locking to lock or unlock from the pop up button on the top of the door. This has also disabled the tail gate. Probabley just a contact come loose inside the latch
there is a single wire micro switch below the plug on the mechanism, clean this contact/plug and it should be fine. also i think you can replace them if you have the old assy. the wire though can/has been known to come off and the connector can get corroded and fail.
think the above is your prob but if you flick the microswitch you should hear it move the central locking. also check that your door latch arm is not bent and causing it to rub on the surround, check this by removing door skin and trying central locking(i drove round without door skins for a few days when mine was acting up)

Right all fixed the wire in the sealed part of the mircoswitch had broken. had to grind it out and soilder on a new wire to the contact. fixed another problem while i was there. the door handles never used to go all the way back closed on there own. had to put a blob of epoxy on the leaver to take up some play. works great now. i took some pictures of the bits, try and put them up tomorrow.
