Hi there, I have the usual problem of the rear wheel being covered in diff oil, I was going to change the wheels bearing seals today but I picked up the wrong locking washer, anyway! When I took the very loose fitting rubber cap thing off the end it was full of oil, is this right? If it is, could it just be that the rubber cap is nackred?

Clean yer breather out and renew cap. There's usually a wee bit of oil in there, but if it's leaking then there might be a build up of pressure;)
 
I cleaned the blocked breather out last weekend and it slowed the leaking right down, but still leaks. The rubber cap popped off quite easy with a poke of a screw driver ( I couldn't get my hands on it coz it was covered in oil!) are they supposed to be tight?

Aye;) But don't get a ****part one or it will leak again pretty quickly!
 
Dunno if ye noticed, but that big hole under the cap goes straight into axle. There's no seals to stop axle oil coming out apart from that cap;)
 
Quite correct about not getting a Britpart one, mine have only been on for 5-years and they STILL don't leak.:p

Yes they should be tight (to stop leaks) and yes there should be oil in there. Occassionaly you see pictures people have posted where the drive-flange is rusted solid onto the halfshaft and they have to grind the drive-flange off to separate them. These are the people who don't carry out regular maintenance like removing the cap and checking there is some oil in there!

Oh dear! Mine is certainly not like that! Came off easy! The bolts had a nice bit of copper grease on too! Problem is, whilst removng the drve flange, I didn't have a new gasket to put on, so it's now ****ing out! Oh well.

Am I right in thinking diff oil is axle oil? So in topping up the diff I to up the axle too?

It probably will but it shouldn't be necessary, I remove my caps 2-3 times a year to check they are lubed and even after 5-years my current (Britpart) ones are 100% oil-tight.
Over time even genuine ones get hard and are difficult to re-fit AND be oiltight but my current ones have proved very good.
