hi there, as per title really, iv seen a 1985 landy that used to have a 200tdi in, but they guy has taken the engine out. are all the engine mounts and gearbox and stuff compatible with both 200 and 300 tdi?
cheers
karl

As described it'll be 'compatible' with the 200 Tdi and earlier - you'll need to move the engine mounts to fit a 300.

the 300 tdi gearbox, an R380 is longer than a 20 tdi gearbox, LT77. so you will have to move the engine forward in order to fit it.

you can buy a "short" R380 gearbox but they are megabucks

ahh right thats alright then, wasnt sure to get 200tdi or 300. but im assuming itl be an LT77 box seen as its had a 200tdi in already. may aswel just put a 200 in and make it easy for myself!
cheers guys

how much do you recon will get a reasonable, used 200tdi? iv seen some for 200 and some for 1000. £400 seem like id get an ok one?

I'd be inclined to go for a scrap Discovery - these can be had for under £500. Firstly you'll know if the engine is a good 'un as you'll be able to drive it. Secondly, once you've removed the engine and all the assorted bits and pieces from under the bonnet, you can strip the rest of the car, sell things like seats, axles, and so on - and finally weigh the remainder in as scrap.

thats a good call.. and id have any spares that i may think would be useful.. seen as im not 100% on what comes with this defender ancillary wise, itd definitely be a good idea..

bear in mind a discovery engine needs a custom parts to fit the engine in. look up steve parker landrover on google

hmm yes true. il have a look now. might not be worth while doing it. might be cheaper to get one with an engine!

Most people manage without any of the Steve Parker kit - it's good stuff and nicely made, but unless you're made of money it's not really necessary. Apart from what came out of my Defender and what came out of the Disco, the only thing I had to buy extra was the exhaust downpipe - there's a guy on ebay that sells them and they're decent bits of kit.

Having said that, if you can find a Defender in your price range with a 200tdi already in it, and the rest of the vehicle is good then you'd be better off going with it. I couldn't stretch to a 200tdi Defender so bought a 2.5TD and converted it myself. I'm no mechanic and had never done anything like it before - but a few days off work and I did the swap on my own. To say I was chuffed is an understatement!

well to be honest, im struggling budget wise, stuck with my car, thrown loads of money at it and cant get it back!!
anyway.. basicaly i have seen a 110 with no engine (he took it out for another project) hopefully for a grand, which is how much i have in cash. the plan was to buy that, sell some rare/wanted bits off my car which i have already been begged for. then stick a 200tdi in that landy and mot it..
to be honest im quite handy on the tools and putting an engine in wouldnt bother me at all. thats good news if its do-able with nothing but a down pipe. seen as it has already had a 200tdi in it, id assume itd be quite easy.
im getting quite tempted... ;-)

Yep. As long as you're happy that the rest of it is solid (pay particular attention to chassis and bulkhead), I'd say go for it. If you don't want it, tell me where it is :p

Haha I think I will to be honest. It needs a couple of patches on the xmember but that's it aparanatly.
Is there a way of testing the gearbox if there is no engine in?
