Hi Guys, needing to tap into some V8 Knowledge. First V8 so bear with me for the daft questions!

Have been changing the head gaskets on my 4.0 v8 (1995 range rover P38, 76000 miles) and noticed that the tappets are ever so slight domed, what is an exceptable amount of wear on these? the dome is visable when looked from side on but has got to be fractions of a mm.

If they are knackered or on their way out its a new camshaft as well I'm guessing from what I've read, am I best to stick to a standard cam or is a high torque one worth the extra pennies?

Cheers for any help

Fit new cam, lifters and chain - stupid not to if you are in that state of disassembly.

Go for the mild upgrade - will put a stupid smug grin on your face - particularly overtaking.

From take-off will feel like a 4.6.

Kent H180 available for GEMS engines as is Piper Torque Max. Make sure you tell whoeve you get it from it is for a GEMS application.

Real steel viper hurricane very good and cheaper than both of the above but not sure if it is GEMS compliant - ditto JE101 from John Eales

Keep quiet for now..........................................................................you only tell her about it when she is pinned back in the passenger seat unable to move as you hoon away from the lights on a huge wave of torque - then then you finally kill off all objections by explaining that because the engine has more power and torque it doesn't have to work as hard hauling the car around so you will save fuel as well.
She will be very impressed and you will get your leg over that night for being a clever boy!!!!!

my oh my.the thought of a rover engine that hoones...

Why are you such a conceited bastard Zen?

my 5.2 litre John Eales special in my griff certainly effin hoons.

And it revs - to 7500

And it is reliable - has done 65000 miles with nothing other than oil, filters and plugs, and we had it on the rolling road in march and it made 395 bhp at 6750 rpm, just 1 bhp less than when it was brand new, 10 years ago.

It seems to me you take great pleasure in undermining other peoples' confidence in their RV8 engines - never anything constructive or helpful to say.

The whole purpose of forums like this is for guys to help each other - not carp from the sidelines about how wonderful their alternative powerplants are.
