Evening all,
Have just bought a 1999 discovery 2 td5 and on closer inspection have noticed that the chassis has been repaired in quite a few places.
What is the general thought on off roading with a chassis in this condition?
I am happy trying some gentle green laning but am worried about twisting/flexing the chassis on a off road course....

Any help appreciated....

No pics yet sorry guys, yes it has a current MOT for around six months.
The repairs are welded plates where rust/rot has been cut out of the chassis. They have not been butt welded, just new metal welded in to cover the area removed from the chassis....

grow some balls. i wouldnt worry until it starts to bend in the middle.

sorry if i sound a bit mean, im just playing :) my series chassis was patched all over till i replaced it with galv and i dont go light off road

the majority of land rovers that kind of age on the road have had some welding done to the chassis :D

The chassis. It's the weak point on these beasts. If the welding is good, then there'll be no problem off road, but the real thing is that as time goes by, the rot will spread, meaning more welding until I guess it's eventually financially not viable to go on.

So the options are to sell it while it's still in fair condition, or off-road it like you stole it, enjoying the ride until it's kaput and hope there's a year or three in it.

theres no need to kill it off by driving like an idiot though just because its had a couple of patches. i bet theres some chassis out there that have nearly none of their origional steel left. mine wasnt far off till i went galv. still stood up to flying.

Can you see the welds? Do they look fairly uniform and neat? If yes then chances are it's a decent weld, welders who can weld well tend not to cover up their work, any welder who says, "I gave it a good coating of sealant" is just hiding some bad welding.

When I do any welding repairs I weld it all up then give it 2 or 3 coats of primer and then some black paint or a coating of waxoyle, the weld is then visible and I can also keep an eye on any other corrosion sneaking in near it. The only welds I seam seal are body welds.

Also, where are the repairs, if they are outwith the suspension/radius trail arm mounting points to the back or front of the vehicle then the stress on the chassis will be far less than for example a big plate right in the middle of the chassis rail or where a suspension component mounts.
