Hi there, I'm a novice when it comes to the technical side of Land Rovers so your going to have to bear with me. Basically I have a 1987 Defender 2.5td on which the clutch is very stiff (even for a Defender) and gear changes difficult. So I have taken it to someone to sort it out. He has looked at the clutch to see if its a rusted pin and apparently its not. So anyway, he's got to do some other stuff to the clutch which will involve him removing the gearbox which got me thinking. If he is removing the gearbox would it be worth me getting him to put an old discovery gearbox back in. Will it be much more work for him? How much is an old discovery gearbox likely to be and is it really worth it?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Oli

no - its not worth it - the levers are all in the wrong place for a depender. Change the TRANSFER box to a disco one, by all means - but not the box.

If ya do put the disco transfer box on make sure ya fit the handbrake bracket off the defender ;) other wise ya cable dont work ;) don't ask me how i know

it has a higher? ratio - therefore yu get a higher cruising speed, lower revs at the same speed.

hmm

i am putting full disco engine, gearbox and transfer box in my 90 td. i know the levers are quite far back but i have removed the middle seat and i have a friend who is a lathe worker. thinking we will either heat gearstick and put a kink in or cut it and create a joint to change it to a more user friendly position.

the engine gearbox and transfer i am putting in are good and well serviced (still on a working disco right now) so want the full usability

are you sure you want to spoil a defender ?:)

james,

the gearbox is bost in mine and to be honest i am loath to splitting the engine/gearbox/transfer off the disco as they are in great nick and full service history (the disco they are off if rotten to hell though). if i do it right will give the 90 a much better lease of life than can otherwise do. i am keeping the rest of it standard looking.

i will take lots of pictures when i do it and a bit of description

Its in the garage being done this week. The discovery box is being used but converted. Also bell housing too so it will remain on same engine mounts.

He does the conversion using standard landrover pipes with extensions so if I have a problem in the future. Pipes straight off the shelf. He's got a great rep so looking forward to it.

I thought the whole idea was that you used the engine mounts from the defender on the disco lump so it sat further foreward or so I read somewhere.

you would have to cut old chassis mounts of a weld new ones further forward apart from numerous other modifications even the gear stick wouldnt be right
