I', sure I read somewhere, but cannot find it, that you have to disconnect the battery in a particular sequence.
can anyone remind me which terminal is first and why?
 
you chould remove the negative lead first as if your spanner contacts a metal body part while undoing this it will do nothing if you are undoing the positive terminal first it will cause the spanner to get rather warm and spark a tad


this is assuming you are working on a negative earth vehicle

You also have to disconnect the battery within 17 seconds I think after you turn off the ignition:confused:
 
the reason you take the neg terminal off first is so that it does not cause sparking,if sparks are about it could cause the battery to explode as battery fumes can be explosive,so its neg of first then pos,to put back on its pos first then neg.:D
 
That assumes you have a negative earth motor. I believe all Range Rovers are, but some on LZ will have pos earth, in which case undo the pos first.
Why 17 seconds?

Something to do with the alarm I think, I read it somewhere on RAVE but not sure exactly where, I will try to find it again

Page 151 of the owners manual..... If the vehicle is equiped with a battery backed alarm siren (mine is) it is esential to adopt the following procedure.

1 Turn the starter switch on and then off and then remove the key from the vehicle.
2 Disconnect the battery within 17 seconds. If the battery is not disconnected within 17 seconds the alarm will sound.

Always remove the negative lead first.:D
 
I have to say that I always use a starter battery pack thingy across the battery leads when swapping batteries just for this very reason and also so as not to lose any radio codes. Takes a bit of practise but can save a lot of headaches :)
 
to save batt codes etc,just connect a 9 volt pp9 battery to a cigar lighter connector and plug this in to the cigar lighter,this just puts enough power in to the system to save codes etc.

The cigar lighter is not live unless the ignition is turned to position #1
