Hi

New to landrovers and automatics really.

Had my truck a few weeks and loving it, apart from my fuel station visits!!

few questions about the gearbox:

1) When travelling along and you come off the gas, normally within about 15-30 secs, (only with the windows down) i can hear a sound that resembles a stick snapping but i havent driven over one, its only when the windows are down, no noise from inside but im guessing its the gearbox changing gear, but is it normal? Think i have only just noticed it because the weather has reccently been good.

2) I can hear a small knock when either i change from D to R or other way round, of when i use the hand brake and the car creeps slightly on a hill, the car can be in N or P. I only hear it when i first start to move the car, its not during moving or gear changes etc.

3) I started the car the other day (In Neutral) and the S & M warning lights came on, Its the only time its happenind and i did what the manual said and its seemed fine, i did a 200 mile journey straight after and it was fine. possible electrical fault because i started in neutral, havent tried it since.

The gear changes are smoother on my Disco than my dads 2002 Landcruiser Amazon TD, so im hoping its not knackered.

My car is a 1999 TD5 ES, 96000 miles and has just had the full works service, no problems came back with the car, but i don't want to go back again if its me just worring about nothing.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure about the others, but the S & M is not uncommon. It's happened a couple of times on mine and is OK once you switch engine off and then back on. I've read that it's caused by low voltage and I suspect it can be caused by pushing the box into gear slightly too quickly after starting up, before teh battery and charging system have sorted themselves out. I could be wrong. I often am. My wife says I always am.

Don't forget there is lot of mechanical bit on LR transmissions and they do wear. get all the nipples well greased and always be prepared for the "slack" in the transmission to factor in especially when going from d - r.

anyone know what the life expectancy is for a TD5 gearbox, surely it shouldnt be overly worn with 95K on it?

Mine's going fine with 110k, but it IS advisable to change oil and filters occasionally. Clutch wear inside the auto box presumably depends on how it has been used. I suspect the torque converter is more likely to cause problems at this sort of mileage.

My TD5, 2000MY Auto has 187,000km on the clock and the gear box is just fine. Sometimes get a slight clonk when I lift off the gas quickly but otherwise ok. Also I've noticed that the convertor takes a while longer to lock up now the colder weather is here but it's not a major concern. For the 200,000 service I intend to have all the fluids replaced, G/Box, Trans Box, Diffs, Engine etc
