I've got a 1997 300tdi auto disco, been using the cruise control with no problem since getting it.

Suddenly on the weekend noticed it wasn't working at all. The button light comes on, but no response to steering wheel buttons.

I've checked the fuse in the dash fuse box, but other than that I'm lost!

Have seen posts saying to check the hoses. Any idea how I go about locating them?

Is there anything else to check while I'm there?

Got several 200+ mile motorway journeys coming over the next month, and roughly zero cash Hoping it's as simple as cutting and refitting a hose..

Check the rubber vacuum tube for splits where it joins the bits and bobs it's a common problem. To trace just start at the throttal actuator (bellows).

Thanks, now I must stress I really don't know my way around the engine. Or any engine, tbh

Where might I find the throttle actuator, and what would it look like? ;D /noob

Your not the only one I don't know my way around a diesel engine either, I've never even seen one so your one up on me.

You will have to wait untill till a diesel owner replies.

But the hose also goes to the brake light switch at the brake pedal, so you will see it going through the bulkhead below or to the side of the brake servo.

Theres also a little solenoid with the vac hoses under the left hand spare battery tray.
There is also a little t piece near the fuel filter on the bulkhead.
If you have a look around in the manaul all the measurements are in there for setting up the cables to stop the surging as it comes on and off the throttle makes a lot of difference.

Checking this has unearthed all manner of problems!

I'll try to get some photos up at lunch so hopefully can shed more light on it!

My guess is that your vac pipe has come off or has a hole in. I've got to replace mine as it has perished

I checked the cruise control vacuum hose at the throttle unit end, was a bit split. Cut and refitted to no avail Can't see where the other end goes..

Well, I think I've found my problem!

Left work, turned the steering wheel hard left, and suddenly the steering column casing fell to pieces, shattered, and my levers tried to go through the dashboard! They were turning with the wheel!

Got recovery people out who discovered the steering wheel rotary coupler was faulty, meaning my horn wasn't working, neither was the cruise control. Removed it and drove away no problem.. now to get a new unit (bout £30) and replace!
