I recently went to a 4 wheel alignment specialist in Norwich. I asked the fella in charge what he thought of disco 3's. He said that off the record he knows that they suffer terribly from steering geometry and he does a hell of a lot of alignments for the local stealer "Hunters". He said that the thing he has found out is that unless the customers kick up about it to the stealer, the stealer stays quiet about the recurring fault with disco 3's. They try to convince the customer that it is due to circumstances out of their control and not a design/manufacture fault.
He said that he must have aligned about 30 disco 3's over the last 18 months, all suffering from excessive and premature tyre wear. Out of those numbers, he reckons that only 40% of those jobs were done under warranty as Joe Public thought that it may be his fault going over rough ground/kerbing/incorrect tyre pressures etc etc.
Apparently, if the customer goes to the main stealer and kicks off, they get the steering realigned and new tyres, if they dont, they end up hundreds of quid lighter. He didnt actually sell tyres so he said he had no vested interest in collaborating with main stealers but felt that he was stuck in the middle as if he advised customers of the fault who had not been back to the dealer, then he would potentially lose the business from hunters...
