Hi all,

Got a bit of a problem, and I have looked on here and still can not find the answer, which I normally can, but there is lots about lack of power.....

I have a disco td5, 2000 ES, with a stage 2 TD5 Alive tune, or should I say had!!!! With silicon hoses, I came back to derby a couple of weeks ago then found I had diesel in my oil!!! When I got back to norfolk I put it straight into JSF for the injector seals and copper washers to be fixed, which they did, and this is were my problems start. :confused:

On the way home I had a definite lack of power, worst of all when pulling away it takes a long time to build up enough power to pull away, mid range is ok but top end struggles after 60:( I have just changed the turbo actuator, which having read on here was a cheap fix and kind of sounded like my problem, but it didn't really make a difference, I'm now thinking about having the injectors recon'd but don't want to spend £500 if I don't have to, there's also no fault logged on hawkeye, please does anyone have any pearls of wisdom that may help, thanks in advance:blabla:

I've heard several cases when after the washer/seal repplacement on T5 te engine missbehaved, conclusions were
1. they didnt work clean enough and some debris remained there...the simple renewal of the operation with extreme care may fix the problem ... quite often
2. the mechanics in their wisdom mixed the injectors ... so it needed recalibration(this one is pretty rare)

IMO to make sure it was a good job put a fuel pressure gauge after the FPR and leave it there over night....if pressure will drop it means the seals are leaking

Fitted new seals and washers to my 2001 td5 auto due to diesel in oil problem and due to the fact i didn't clean the seats of the injector housing properly got the same problem again. Sierrafery is spot on. The injector housing must be bloody clean or the same will occur even with new parts.PPPPPP. Prior planning prevents p!*s poor performance
 
thanks for the replies, been to JSF and asked about fitting, they have a "special tool" to clean the pot. Also changed the FPR, made a little difference, but still not up to stage 2 tune....:( it now appears that my turbo may be on the way out as will, should like a grating/grinding sound when its spooling down, maybe the bearings, maybe thats been my problem fron the start...:doh: not heard it before and it is quite loud, lasts for about 20 seconds before it stops, but i don't hear it when the engine is running (thats with bonnet up)....:confused: anyone know were i can get a cheap OEM one from, looked at a couple of links on here but they seem old ones
 
If you can't hear it with the bonnet up and the engine running then I would say the noise you are hearing is the rotor filter slowing down when the engine is switched off.

Take off the hose to the turbo and see if there is laterial movement on the turbo shaft that should answer your question.
 
I've got exactly the same problem and exactly the same tune as you (except I have a straight through pipe ;-) )

Speak to Gary at alive tuning, (td5 alive) he is a td5 guru and always happy to help a customer!

I took the red plug off the ecu today to find it full of oil, which indicates that the problem is the injector harness,
It's an extremely common fault on the td5 and an easy fix - should only cost about £100 if you put it into a garage! Or £45 if you DIY!!!

Mine has been exactly the same since having the o-rings and copper seals replaced,

So it's a common fault!!

I'll have my injector loom cleaned and a replacement injector harness and see how that goes!!

Already spoke to Td5 alive, was clutching at straws again to see if it was possible to "lose" the programming in the ECU, knew the answer before I rang but did it anyway ( not its not possible, mine was chipped with an EPROM) as for the oil thing, I had a new injector loam on it not long ago, and my red plug is oil free ( wasn't always that way, just kept cleaning it) I have just changed the fuel filter and that made a diffence as well, still only have about 80% of power, but have read that black top injectors take a while to "reset" after being disturbed, the only other option is having the injectors recon'd, my local indi (JSF in Norwich) say it will cost about £500 to do it though them:(, and that's still an option, but it's drive able so not to bothered at the minute ( can't afforded it yet anyway:() apparently after a "few hundred miles" don't know how many it's supposed to sort it self out but it never regains all it's horses, I have read about 90% regain, unless, as above, you have the injectors done:confused: but that's only what I have read, if a new injector loom works for you I will change mine to, there only £35 and only take half hour to fit, putting the cover back on takes the longerst time

Just been to see a diesel injection specialist, he said that it is a common problem with TD5's were the injectors, once disturbed, become "faulty" because they work on such fine tolerances so that they feel like they are not getting enough diesel, hence the lack of power, so mines going in to have the injectors checked, it could be one or all of them, still not sure if it's worth just changing the lot, there £150 each plus vat for total overhauled ones, so the worst it could be would £750+vat plus fitting:( the indi I take mine to tried a new injector harness but that made on difference, and my MAF definaty works so no problems there...:confused:

Question: if only one is at fault should I just have that one done? Or just bite the bullet and have the lot done:confused: this is starting to do my head in.......:doh:
 
never herd that crap about "once the injectors have been disturbed" and ive replaced a few ffs over the past 11yrs sounds to me like the problem is that whom ever fitted the seals has not adjust or made a cockup of adjusting the injector "bump" clearences
 
Further update:blabla:

I spent the morning taking the rocker cover off and checking to make sure that the injectors were in the right places and that the rocker adjustments were correct, turns out that the rockers were not, I suppose that no two people will get the same results, anyway my TD5 now sounds better than before and as improved in the mid range, but still couldn't pull a skin of a rice pudding when first setting off, once going it then pick up:confused: will now give it a few days to see if it improves, will keep you all informed.....

Just as aside: is it just me or as anyone else notice that a lot of post never seem to tell you what they did to cure there problems?:rolleyes:
 
Try unplugging the air flow meter as it may have given up after being disturbed, mine did, took my ages to figure it out but once run with it unplugged it flys!
 
Yes. It's sometimes a bit frustrating when you don't hear how a problem is eventually resolved. :confused2:
 
already did the air flow "thing" and i do have a working one on it.....

also i got into it this morning to come to work and.... it just about felt like it should, but will still give it a couple of day to see, just incase its a flook:)
 
Well, of it runs great without it, fit a new one as the one you have is fuber'd. Mine ran great without it but took 20 seconds or so to run properly once started. Genuine new one fitted and it's running beautifully.
 
i had one the other day with the EGR valve stuck slightly open and was loosing boost down low in revs.. but once it was around 3k it was ok...sounds similar....???
 
I think I can safely say that I have fixed it:) looks like it was the setting on the injectors, it's been fine since I adjusted them, so I think that job done.....
