I'm having an issue with my Disco, when I tow a caravan, even if its just 2 miles my Landy will not start.
The ignition lights are on ok and i can hear relays operating under the glovebox. I can also feel the Gear selector switch click.

After about 20-30 mins it starts fine!
It continues to start great, as it always has done. This caravan issue is baffling me though.

Any ideas guys?

No not at all, all the ignition lights are there ok and there is no dimming if them when I turn the key.

Id check wires going to starter see if you can hear the solenoid firing to engage the starter. Then check relays etc, must just be a coincidence that its after towing

Hey Ben

I can't hear the starter solenoid but I hear the relays clicking away. Really strange that it is only after towing the last 3 times. Away at the moment so will have to get a look at the bugger when I get back.

Well when you get back id try wiggling the wires and make sure earth is good, is strange that its after towing but must be just pot luck. where abouts in highlands are you? I was just up there if the post was up a week earlier may have been your way

did you connect the towing socket grey plug ? its a split charge for your fridge etc ,if theres a fault it will drain your car battery in minuits

Inverness, Ben.

Will, I don't use or have the grey plug. I just use it for lights.

Cheers.

Amazingly my oil cooler pipe sprung a leak due to corrosion 3 weeks ago, in the wheel arch!
Still not home, choppers mayhem due to recent crash.

Have you still got a heatshield between the starter and the downpipe?

If not its likely that the starter is getting too hot and sticking until it cools down

Yep the heat shield on the starter is there. My front silencer snapped though, unrelated I know. A quick snip from a downed fence had me on my way.

A friend has suggested I fit an electric fan as the viscous fan is not cooling enough.

Any views or other ideas welcome.
Cheers

When towing caravan does the temp gauge go higher than normal?

No Ben, that was one of the first things I checked. After towing though I did notice the airflow meter was really hot to touch. So hot you could not keep you hand on it.

These cars in some orientations did have transfer case temp sensors fitted.

What year is the vehicle and have you checked your lubricants?

If fitted, the temp sensor is on the nearside of the transfer case very close to the input gear location.

This 'could' prevent starting. I say this because some cars will not start with the transfer case look disconnected from the main loom, so it could be this.

I thought originally it simply put a light on the dash, but maybe there is more to it.

Anyway, if you pull one of the wires off the sensor and it then starts, you've got either a transfer case overheat or a dodgy/over sensitive sensor.

See what luck you get there.

You also need to manually excite your starter motor to mechanically eliminate it from the equation, and check your starter cutout switch on the gearshift.

Hth :)
