hope i dont get hung for coming into this domain , please be gentle, lol

one of my neighbours buys and sells cars

he's offered to do a swap with my freelander with two of his discos

they are both 2002 , one is a td5 and the other a v8

only do 2,000 miles a year, fancy the v8 but bit worried about taking it on

haven't seen them and been told there straight and come with service history and are both around the 100,000 miles , he's told me they are both are autos

only thing the interiors need changing as there ripped and worn which I'm not to worried about , but puts a red flag up of what they've been used for

for this year of disco has the wallowing been resolved when going round corners

what are they like for spares cost , know thats like having a crystal ball in not knowing what part , service parts etc

starting to read through the forum to see what traits to look out for as im going to have a look and drive in a few weeks time and would rather go with abit more knowledge

only ever owned series and freelander

fancy a change and doing a bit more off roading and know the disco is a more capable vehicle than my hippo

thks guys

2 Disco's for a Hippo, hope he's giving you some cash as well :p

On a serious note, go for the v8 if you do low mileage and that's what you want. You only live once, and think of the noise every time you start it :D

that would be nice, lol

reading through sites and seen the disco 4 has to have its body removed to replace the timing belt,

really do like the idea of the v8 , but wonder how much it would cost to do a lpg conversion

expect a v8 would return around 15 mpg i suppose

as i know nothing about discos got to learn a new vehicle but really do fancy one, ut of course need to get some more knowledge under my belt before looking at them

Freelander, betterly known as Gaylander
Mike

Edited for accuracy! :p :D :D

EDIT - have a look around the Discovery section to get a feel for the D2 problems. Check the rear chassis of both of them - they like to rust quite a lot! D2s have their 3 amigos too ;)

Discovery 2 is a completely different vehicle to a Freelander, both in mechanical complexity and in capabilities.

Bodies are good, rear chassis tend to go rusty, V8's are reliable if coolant and cooling system maintained, diesels tend to have loads of niggling little problems, and the occasional big one

Body, gearboxes and transmissions are the same for diesel and petrol.

Plenty of D2's being broken for spares so an interior refit should be do-able.

V8's are great to drive and tow with but economy not so good as the diesel. LPG is around £1800 or so for a multipoint system, I can recommend Energyshift at Ashford, Peter Feacey does our LPG work and is good.

I'd always have a V8, simply the best of the two engines, that extra 50bhp makes a big difference.

thks guys

started to read around the forum and know ive got a lot to learn , but was the same when i first bought the freelander , has been a great vehicle but with the opportunity of doing a swap need to ensure im not buying a dog

the last disco i drove i felt sea sick and terrible around corners

have seen what the different models will do off road , fenders, discos and freelanders and feel the discos have the comfort of the freelander and robustness of a defender so hopefully best of both worlds

will have the chance with the v8 to do a compression test so hopefully will give me a better idea of its condition

got a hawkeye and wondering what it will cost to get it unlocked for discos as may save me money in the long run

thks again

ebay appears to have unlock codes going for nearly 200 quid! Not too far from a new bloody Hawkeye!

yikes , didnt think it would be that much

just been reading through the v8 rebuild, have rebuilt an engine in my old series but thats in a different league, very impressive

really enjoyed doing a rebuild, took me 6 months mind and wasn't in any rush , had the head redone by turner engineering

if i had the money would love to completely strip down a disco and rebuild it from scratch

Both are good engines, TD5 more economical also tuneable.

TD5 and LPG similar costs per mile, estimate at your mileage and extra £200 to £300 a year for V8 on petrol. That is not much really.

If they have ACE they do not even lean in corners.

TD5 is heavy so front suspension is a bit hard.

I get 18 out of mine, mostly long motorway journeys though. If it has ACE (Active Cornering Enhancement) then it is very stable around corners.

I think it's the last "proper" Land Rover: beam axles, mechanical transfer lever, possibility of centre diff lock (not fitted as standard, and not possible at all on some years). I'm very happy with mine.

thks for that

can i ask a daft question then , mines got traction control and u say the disco has diff lock, do u think the diff lock is better than the tc

the freelander has done me proud but as this offer has come up really do fancy not worrying about height issues ,

thks about the info on the ace , another daft question how do i know its fitted, can i tell by looking at the springs

owned landies for over 20 years and might as well go through them, lol

plus its got to have an auto due to having a disability and also thought the air suspension would be handy for getting in and out and also having the extra height off road

really appreciate the help guys,

thks again

Mine doesn't have the diff lock, and is from the 18 month period when the transfer box didn't have the internals for it, so all I have is TC too. I like traction control and HDC, but I can see situations where having DL too would be a boon.

Air susp is only on the rear, and you need a special remote plip to lower it. Raising for off road is standard.

You can tell it has ACE if there is a double reservoir under the bonnet, one side power steering, the other ACE

my pad is getting fuller by the minute, cheers guys

so will see in the cab then if its got either diff lock or tc, , is it better then to have the tc over diff lock , but of course if its got neither i assume its very expensive to retrofit it

u say about having a blip to raise the suspension , is that on the keyfob , sorry asking daft questions

just writing a lot of stuff down so can have it when i go and see them and be able to identify what its got and not as the case may be
