ive allways found while not technically complicated setting diff carrier preload and back lash very awkward in getting to shims behind brgs as they can be on tight
 
I've done a few salisburys now and theyre ok bit more fannying than a river diff as you have to stretch the case to extract the diff

Some diffs fall out and slip back in. Mostly those that have the incorrect bearing preload, missing shims or high milage knackared or messed with by non mechanics. Some people go the other way and shim the bearings too much making it darn impossible to get the diff out and back in again. This results in too much preload and probably help premature failure of bearings. I think its a bit of fannying to get it as it should be but worth while. If one fell out I wouldn't put it back in it would need to be right to go back in my mota. My old salisbury 3.5:1 now removed was sweet this 4.7 one I fitted was probably thrown together with out any shims or preload it so I will sort it out when I refit my locker later this year after the ALRC nationals.
 
I do have a tool to stretch the case. but it is not from LR its a home made jobbie. I'm working on a jig to drill diff cases square for Pinning next thats a job for the next few weeks to make a nice strong decent jig so I can pin all my diffs.

Looking at P38 4 pin diffs if anyone has any kicking about cheap-ish

i know he isn'#t always the cheapest but have a word with RGB landrover i have seen a few P38s down there

you dont need a stretcher to do them properly ,we used to recondition loads for the mod and lr parts (built out of all new parts )the most important tool is a puller for removing carrier brgs without destroying them to carry out the shimming to get correct preload and back lash ,even after measuring using dti your lucky if you get it right first time,and the other tool which we made ourselves 6ft bar with 2 x pin to hold pinion flange while tightening nut to crush spacer
 
I'm hearing a 6Ft bar to hold the flange thats on the list of tools required to make. I've heard some horror stories about not having correct preload. Its not alot (can't remember off the top of my head) but Hey ho.

I hope you wasn't one of the people responsible for rebuilding LT77's for the MOD. Mine was supposidly a Military Recon as boxed by the MOD because who ever did the recons one I got and another a few years before that was rubbish may aswell have poured atf out the window probably would have lasted longer than in my box!
 
no we got involved as at that time a lot of companys werent really reconditon units for the mod properly just painting them it seemed to be a gravy train as any bad ones came back to them to be rebuilt but not under warrenty so they got paid again,we got involved with lt85 fitted to snatch vehicles and the reliabilty of vehicle had to be improved for obvious reasons ,after we were sucessful with lt85 we were given the axles to do
