I wounder if anyone can help me again, i have a range rover classic 300 tdi auto. with no diff lock was in need of one today as i spent most of the off road day winding up the diff is there anyway of changing the gear box or can u put a diff lock on help needed please:eek:
 
as fet says you do have a self locking diff and if it is a se it would also have traction control on the rear axle too
 
good point fett rrc often become 2wd as rear output shaft in transfer box strips splines easy to check and fix without removing transfer box,or halft shaft failure etc
 
I loved the viscous on my old one , much better when offroad and with an auto too it was fire and forget :D
 
Agreed, I have a viscous coupling rather than a locking diff, seems to work well offroad!

james - how do you test if it works, then?
 
if you jack up front wheel ,with good size bar (pipe on wheel brace is fine )on wheel nut ,wheel should turn slowly and stiffly ,if wheel spins easily either axle part broken meaning no drive from front axle or viscous is spinning and so bust,if its locked then its seized and needs changing as will be putting strain on drive train ,likewise you jack up rear wheel and it spins free youve lost drive to back
 
When I spin one rear wheel the opposite side rear rotates in the opposite direction, same on the front - is that correct?

Thats if you have both wheels jacked at the same time, and this indicates the Diff is working correctly....

To check the V/C, 3 wheels need to be on the ground and you try to spin the one in the air....
