Evening, All.

In my quest to minimise transmission backlash it has occurred to me to explore the front diff (yes,
I know it's a final drive really) output flange. I know these are splined and easy enough to remove, but wondered how much they are likely to wear. It may be worth a punt replacing mine. The seals are good, so I'll leave them alone.

Many thanks,

Dom

There is play in the front diff. I have replaced front prop, front drive members and TB input shaft. There is no play in the rear half of the drive system, so I'm targeting the front! I know half shafts could be worn, as could the CV joints, as could the diff itself. I'm trying to eliminate the less expensive options first!

will flange move up down or side to side a little if so either the nuts loose or taper pinion bearings are worn , a lot of rotational play can be diff gears plus shaft ,or halfshafts ,cv or drive members or a bit in all

I don't think the flange does move as you describe. I was hoping for an easy fix, but I suppose it's more likely to be the other things you mention.
