Can anyone tell me anything about the defender 2.5td engine on the early models. mine is currently a petrol 90 but ive been offerd a td engine out of aanother defender but not sure if i should have it and can i change the pump in the tank and keep the rest the same and drop it in or is there more to it.

Hi, it's not too difficult to do but you will need to sort the following, provide feed for the fuel shut off solenoid and the glow plugs, return fuel line to the tank alter exhaust and possibly rad and hoses, but it's a similar amount of work for a 200 or 300tdi which is more powerful which makes me wonder if the td is worth doing given that they are 22 years plus!

Its just money is tight at the moment and seeing the engine is free just wonderd if id benefit from it more considering mine is petrol and doing 18 to the gallon on a good day. i could use the feed that was for the coil for the glow plugs?

Why is it free? Some of them TDs are proper pain in the arse **** heads. Do a google search for 19j engine, you could be doing a whole load of work to give yourself a whole load of problems and headaches. Keep the petrol.

Personally, I wouldn't, google 19J or search on here, they have quite a few issues, plus they are, as already said over 20 years old now.
Coil feed would probably be ok for the fuel solenoid, but doubt it would have enough capacity for glow plugs.
AFAIK there is no pump in the tank on a 19J, theres a lift pump on the side of the engine I beleive, and the injector pump.

oh, and to add, the 19J isnt a very economical engine, what you see in MPG increase is probably mostly, if not all eaten up in the extra cost of deisel.

i wouldnt touch a td with someone elses bargepole... however

ignition feed for stop solenoid is fine

get disco glow plug relay, wire feed to starter main 12 volt, one wire to cold start light (makes good glow plug on off light) one to ignition start feed

but engine is underpowered, overstressed and was only a tdi stop gap... i really wouldnt bother

oh and pump in tank???? what petrol u got???? most are pump on block or inline electric??

dont forget the diesel return line to the tank... not found on a petrol

tdi is the way to go... just done my lightweight and also did my td 90 in years past.. check my site

cheers steve

Hey i got a 2.5na petrol. its a really good engine new carbs the lot. its just that its juicy. i miss my old 200tdi. id love to put a 200tdi in it but id get lost as you need to change the mounts, bell housing god knows what else

I changed my 2.25 petrol to a 200tdi, look at 200tdi conversions there is a petrol to diesel one some where that will give you a good idea what to do

There is a return line already on the petrol, I kept the electric fuel pump on mine and so far it's been fine, I just used the blank plate off the petrol

Tbh if you are going to that trouble I would fit a 200tdi

It's not so difficult the mounts you just unbolt from the petrol and bolt on the diesel and the bell housing just needs a couple of mods

mark i've now done 3 2.25 to tdi.... i have never found a petrol with fuel return line the 2.25 doesn't need one??? (v8 does though) admittedly mine have all been series petrols to diesel... i neved realised they even did a 2.25 90/110 was it a different setup to the military series 2.25 landy??? in fact the latest was my lightweight 2.25 3 weeks ago and i had to fit a return from the tdi dist pump to tank as per glencoyne and every other site???? did they produce a 90/110 with an electric puimp??

cheers steve

I a 90/110 it has an electric fuel pump hence the need for return, there is a black pot on the bulk head with 3 pipes one is supply from tank, one is return to tank, the other is the supply to the carb

And yes early 90's where 2.25
