Dear fellow diesel owners,

How often do you top up your coolant?
After a 400 mile trip I had to add a little anti-freeze as the level was a little low. Maybe 10 or 15cl, not much, but it left me wondering how often do you need to top up (I know cars are not supposed to loose coolant, but it happens..).

Got a recon engine in mine now and I have to top up about the same but I do suspect heater matrix "o" rings as my driver side carpet seems damp... Ohhh bugger

Are you sure about the rings. It's not the driver leaking?
As you get older and all that . . . . .

My carpet seems dry and I've reached under the plastic cover and couldn't find anything wet, but one day I had emptied the cooling system and upon refilling I did find some coolant on the footwell. Since it hadn't appeared again I never considered that the o-rings or the matrix could be leaking. Will have to look into that once the summer arrives.

I have only needed to top up coolant once and that was after I had a belt snap. I believe it dislodged a pipe temporarily as it hasn't been a problem since I filled it up. The only times I add coolant is after I've lost some through work on the engine and pipes had to be shifted or general servicing.
Since the last fill up I've covered about 2k miles and not lost a drop.

I've never topped up. I only glance at it when checking oil levels and it's always sat there on the high mark...

It should be checked regularly but should not need topping up unless there is a leak. Get a static test rig on it. Blow it up to 12psi and see if it drops if it does it's leaking. This also gives a chance to look for drips. Sometimes unseeable on an hot engine as they evaporate.
