If you had it on cam the pressure head should be pushed out as you release the bolts. How do you mean took it out. If you had to pull it out you were not on cam.
Ok then, shim can't have dropped out. Did you not mark up centre section before removing it to give you at least some guide?
Tapping the centre section forwards will reduce fuel, tapping it aft will increase fuel. We are talking minute amounts. Don't forget when at idle engine is being controlled fuel wise by idle control, to much fuel will cause the engine to rev beyond what the ECU thinks it should be doing so it will reduce fuel to slow engine, revs will be up and down like brides nightie. Think i would be checking if you got spigot in control collar.

When you put the pump top back, slide it one way, crack it open a little and peek through to check the control collar has moved. Then shut it, move it back the other way, crack it open and have another peek. Should have moved again. If not you missed the hole. Once sure it is moving, shut it, move it to the marks you made and tighten up. You need marks on all sides to account for twisting as well as back and forth. As I tightened mine it was flexing and knocking it out, hence why I had to leave it a little loose and then tap it until it was good ... and even then, good when tight. I have read that you can mess it up banging the socket onto the security bolt (assuming you didn't have the correct tool and just hammered a socket on) but I'm not sure if there is any truth to it.
Okay, so, two and a half hours today in the rain, took the centre section off, made sure I had the peg in the collar. Rechecked my alignment marks and tried to start, it started but I had no throttle. So, slackened the bolts off and tapped the centre section back a fraction. Improved the idle but no throttle. Same again and an improvement. Lots of back and forth for a couple of hours and - it's all working! The idle is a solid 750rpm, pick up is fine and move away speed and throttle response is excellent. I now just need to clean all the diesel away and make sure I have no leaks but I'm pretty sure it isn't leaking! Cheers for all the help guys!

There are no ECU learnable trims it is either right or wrong.
Odd. Mine was definitely odd for a bit. I think the lift pump was already on the way out though so maybe that combined with some air in the system made it bit erratic till all the air was out.
Maybe but there are no learnable trims like with the petrols. Lift pump not giving it's best or completely duff will cause loss of acceleration and power on hills.
