The mitsu/garrat turbo will take a lot of abuse before it packs up.
Sounds like yours had a hard life...thrashed/towing/ lack of oil changes.

Oil changes on these at this age are now recommended at 6000 mile intervals now by Morris Lubricants (not affiliated) with a thicker grade about 10-15/40 min.

When you get your next turbo...
On start (hot or cold) idle for 10 secs at least but no more than 60 to lubricate it properly. If you put your foot lightly on the throttle immediately and wind the window down you will hear the exhaust note and engine note change as oil pressure stabilises and runs around the engine and turbo.

After driving idle for 20 seconds after normal driving, 30 in warm conditions and a full minute after hard thrashing, towing or uphill climbs. This ensures the turbo cools sufficiently using the oil and carbon deposits aren't left behind.

Oh and check your oil more than once a month! and change it regularly to...its the easiest and best maintenance you can do on an engine. If you look inside your yellow filler cap and its black and sludgy then imagine what your turbo looks like. It should be like brass in there with nice clean metal.

If your turbo self destructed likelihood is most of it probably went through your engine creating other damage. Look and see if there's bits of metal in your exhaust. On the first sign something was wrong (such as the screaming engine, smoke, lack of power) try and pull over and find the problem before more damage gets done to more than one component in a system.

Turbo failure is often instantanious, on my Xtrail it went at 30000 Km with no warning when I put my foot down coming out of a roundabout, the noise was just as you describe.
 
also check the exhaust side of the turbo for oil.
as you have run it with intake from turbo off and it still smokes remove downpipe from turbo and see if it is full of oil in the turbo, had a volvo with renault dci engine in it do exactly that there should be no oil that side if there is the oil seal or rather ring has failed
 
Cheers but dint realy want a second hand one cos there all abount the same age so will probably be on its last legs too


With good treatment on starting and stopping and regular oil changes turbo's should go on for ever. I have a working one with 162K miles on it if you are interested.

Thanks but no thanks mines just past 162k and it too worked perfectly untill yesterday lol
I few ppl are blaming the oil not been changed often. It was changed about 2 months ago ! I change it every 5/6 months cos i get the oil free from work :p

But is it good oil of the right spec?
 
If oil supply is interrupted turbo failure will happen almost instantaneously - things spinning at 100,000+ rpm don't take kindly to oil starvation or under-cooling. When working as designed a turbo could and should out-last the car it is fitted to unless there is a design or operator defect.
