ive got a dse and its got a major problems
firstly its got no power takes ages to get up enough revs to go for second gear, its pumping bucket loads of thick white smoke out and when i say bucket loads i meen you cant see a dam thing out the back window or any were else for about 15 yards
it not steam cos it literaly takes minutes to clear after you turn the engine off and it has a smell of oil in. it plus no water loss
and its realy slow to rev takes about 2 seconds to get to red line
its ticks over smokey but smooth, and revs slow and very smokey but smooth ie.. no coughing / missing ect...
seems to have lost/used alot of oil but i aint checked it for over a month so not certain about that
also when it went it sounded like a screeming cat was in the engine when i reved it but that sound seems to have gone now
im thinking turbo but would that be black smoke?
any help?

Sounds like Turbo...

Check all the hoses as they do delaminate inside, remove the intercooler and check this as they get sludged up.

If it has used a lot of oil, I'd say a Turbo seal/bearing may have failed, pumping oil into the exhaust causing the white smoke (oil in combustion is blue - oil in hot exhaust is white)...

Screaming is the Turbo Bearings failing due to lack of lubrication....

I'd put money on a knackered Turbo unit...sorry!

Check the pipes first yer never know your luck....but I'd put money on a knackered Turbo unit...sorry!

I wouldn't know how to test without specialist gear - The Wammer is pretty good on Diesels - he's on hols at the moment and I don't know how much internet time he can muster....Datatek is pretty clued up on the Diesel too...

A quick blast on the 'Bay found these...

Range Rover P38 Diesel Turbo (with manifold) | eBay

Range Rover P38 BMW 525 325 Omega Diesel Turbo And Manifold | eBay

Range Rover P38 97 DSE BMW DIESEL TURBO & Manifold FREE UK MAINLAND POSTAGE ONLY | eBay

Among a few more.....

Sorry Bud...:(

Usually! Normally the bearings/seals fail and you get loads of movement in the shaft, the impeller can eat into the housing in bad cases, then you get metal going thru your engine:( the engine pumps oil into the inlet and exhaust, they can then run on their own oil and grenade themselves! When they're really bad. This one sounds not too far from that!

Check it spins freely and there should hardly be any up down or side to side play, but without a dti and the measurements its down to guess work, my guess if its run the bearing, is it won spin very well, should feel really smooth

Sounds that bad you won't need a dti! Mine only smokes a bit, is down on power and it's very noticeable by hand!

That's my theory hence looking at recons, midland turbo is close to me so gonna give them a try, they seem to have a good reputation

Depends on lots of things. Have you been thrashing it cos it's down on power? Cos that'll finish it very quickly. Has the oil been changed regularly, could be blocked oil feed! Etc etc

i replaced a transit van turbo not so long ago and it fell apart in my hand and this had only had a new engine 2 months bfor and the turbo was checked then so they dont take long to eat them selfs. Aslo if you relly want to scare youself look up run away diesel engine.
