Hi,
Looking for some general mech' advice..I can't stop the plastic oil filter cap leaking around the joint, no matter how tight I try to tighten it down. I have tried changing the filters and rubber seals twice, but nothing works. Its like the rubber seals that come with the filters are too small.. Any helpful super tip to help seal this. Starting to leave a trail everywhere now.

Try cleaning everthing in thinners then apply a bead of sealant under the rubber seal to increase its thickness fit cap loosely until sealant has set then tighten as normal. Iused this method on a cap that I had that wouldnt seal.

Would gasket sealant be overdoing it, or just silicon sealant.?

Is the cap cracked? It shouldn't take much force to tighten.

Where in Cornwall?

I think I would try silicon first then if it doesnt work you can easily clean it off

Just been fleebaying and can see that this part can be replaced..!!
Gonna try the silicon route, then a new cap if not, ( before I recoat the Cornish highways in black stuff)

Cap is sealed by an o'ring. Only thing you will do tightening it more is break the lip off it.

Did you lubricate the new seal before fitting it? You could have pinched it (not a la Scouse) .That said mine has just started the smallest of leaks, think its telling me to change the oil and filter. Found a new filter in my clear out yesterday, I'll see if I can find any oil today, I told you my garage was like Grrrrrr's shed.

Tightening it down only by hand as tight as I can, without using any tools, (Thanks to a previous owner, there is no big nut on the top anymore), its certainly coming from around the sealing edge.
I will get a new filter, sealing O ring and sealant today and give that a try first.
No visible signs of a crack, but then the whole world is now covered in oil ..joy
Around Bodmin but I use it as a company driver everyday all up and down the county. 28k in 12 months since I got her. So Its not doing bad really.
