can anyone tell me what symptoms a knackerd cv would give?

before we went out today theres a loud screeching from the front which at first i thought was a stone stuck in the guard but its not that

checked wheel bearings not that there only 3 weeks old

it almost sounds like a piece of metal or bearing is being flung around and is wearing against summit and screeching

it doesnt get louder/or faster with speed

took front prop of on the way homeand that made no difference

it really is loud and sounds painfull

dunno if its related but handbrake light is staying on sometimes and gears are getting a bit stiff to select

Turn your steering on full lock and drive you will hear a knocking and grinding, generally worse on full lock.

Doesn't sound like CV, as wickford90 says you mostly hear a CV on lock .. only thing I've heard squeal or screech is a water pump bearing and an alternator bearing/commutator.

water pump and alternator were new last week

it really is a racket but sounds like its in the drive train somewhere:mad:

If the gears are becoming harder to select I would guess a clutch problem or gearbox trouble. The usual method of finding out if your clutch is slipping is to move up through 1st and 2nd gears then select 3rd gear and floor it. If the engine revs but the vehicle doesnt accelerate, the clutch is slipping.

but clutch slipping wouldnt make the horrible screeching noise? it really sounds like when ya get a stone stuck between your disc guard and disc thats the best way to describe the sound

All the axle internals still turn with the prop off! Just not driven, to rule em out leave the prop off and take the drive flanges out, that'll stop the internals spinning and prove whether it's in the axle or not!! W.
Obviously short test only cos the end of the axle as open:)

not so easy on the front tho if it was back i would have took shafts out on way home..

could be the clutch release bearing... does pressing the clutch down change anything... is it all the time the engines running... vehicle moving or stationary.... gearbox in neutral or in gear only....engine speed related or vehicle speed related?

does sound a bit like a dry bearing somewhere

makes no diffence in sound whatever speed you do and its only whilst moving pressing clutch makes no difference to sound

If its not something stuck in between the brake calliper an disk ad say its deffo your cv I had the same sort of noise a few years back an it turned out to be the cv joint but check for stones around the brake calliper first allso check swivels

had each wheel off the gnd in turn and spun the wheel and couldnt get it to make the noise,no stones as we cleaned them and all the mud out and the noise is twice as loud as the stone in guard noise

also the stone in guard noise changes with speed my noise doesnt

does it do it , on and off the throttle? have you had a prop off lately? as i had the same problem , and the prop being out of balance was making the bearing in the transfer box very noisey. after getting prop bang on , it went away. very strange as i had never had this before.

nope no difference on off throttle or over run etc

only time i removed prop was today on the way home to see if it cured it

Sounds like crud in the brakes. Try giving em a quick pressure wash and see if that cures it
