Hello,

I have had a bit of trouble with my Landy recently am looking for a bit of help. It started out with a bit of jerkiness as the clutch was engaged in first and reverse. I had a search and this sounds like the Flywheel. However, I had just come back from a fairly long drive up to Wales and my clutch/gearbox seems to feel a lot different. The biting point is now really close to the floor and when I am stationary and engaging first gear the truck jolts forward a small amount. Also the gears are a lot stiffer to select unless you are very gentle. I'm assuming my problem lies completely with the clutch and flywheel...

id look at hydraulic system first ,flywheel usually shows vibration or clanking noise ,does fluid in reservoir splash when pedals pumped ,try bleeding slave ,remove slave see if its weeping

Just bled the clutch with my one way valve thingy. There wasn't any hydraulic fluid in the reservoir at all, just this dirty black sludge so I filled it up and bled it and it seems to have fixed it. Thank you for the help.

Over the last few days the biting point on my 90 1988 has been getting closer and closer to the floor, going to start with bleeding the system, I hope its that easy but i doubt it will be. Then I'll start replacing parts.

black sludge is usually the seals breaking up ,though can last a long time if res kept topped up

I love that every job I do on my defender ends up with me replacing about 3x as many parts as I anticipated...

Is this just a case of replacing the master and/or the slave cylinders?
I read busters guide on this and it looked like an 'alright' job.

would that be the seals in the slave cylinder, master cylinder, or both?

It's not easy to tell, unless there is obvious fluid loss. Master cyl will be coming down the pedal or bulkhead, slave cyl will be bottom of clutch/bell housing.
If you can't see evidence of fluid, I'd take a punt and change the slave cyl first, it's got clutch plate dust to contend with and mud and muck.
