Just put my 1999 TD5 90 through it's MOT & was a pass but......2 advisories came with it. Front panhard bushes worn but not to excess and offside Front
wheel bearing play. Well i checked the panhard bushes which were Poly and they looked OK to me, but changed them anyway. But this got me thinking is this MOT man all he's cracked up to be, i don't hear any noise from the front end, steering is spot on, no drift left to right, brakes in a straight line.
I've gone a bought 2 sets of wheel bearings for the front axle but i still keep thinking is it worth it as i cannot find any reason to replace them other than his "advisory?" :decision:

Any wheel bearing play is normally a fail surely? Are you saying you cant feel any play at all?

I wondered that with some of my advisories last year (and ones that caused it to fail).

I had slight play in steering drop arm, which failed. You couldnt detect it by hand (even with the drag link taken off), he "detected" it by putting it on ramps that shook the car from side to side. Made me wonder a little, as where i'd taken it the year before didnt have any fancy ramps like that, so wouldn't have been able to detect the play......

ive had a fail from a mot garage because my td5 110 front wheel bearing needed adjustment to remove the play, the garage advised they could do this for £50, bearing in mind there is no adjustment possible on td5 as they tighten onto a spacer, I collected the car and then took it back 2 hours later and they passed it even though I never altered anything,
They use it as a money spinner in my opinion

I cannot say I've jacked up the front with both wheels off the ground to check for any play in the bearing, but after looking / changing the panhard bushes that looked as good as the one's I replaced them with, I still think they were looking for work? As John has mentioned above, it was money spinner for them.
