If you get underneath you should be able to move this lever


I would guess it needs to be towards the gearbox to be off, but just a guess as there are a couple of linkages and it makes my head hurt working it out

As Pikey said, you shouldn't be able to drive at all without a prop shaft connected, unless the diff lock is on. You are just lucky the prop shaft gave out rather than something else...
