I agree it's not a bad thing to buy, but, think i'd rather give £5 direct to them.
I support both the life boat people and the air ambulance and mountain rescue guys - all should be government funded, but aren't.

Why!!! If everyone stopped supporting all these charity funded emergency services the goverment would have to something about it. People climb mountains because they want to for fun, People go to sea to earn a living and should have a state funded emergency service... RANT OVER IF YOU DONT LIKE MY OPINION TOUGH LIVE WITH IT!!!!!!!

You never know. the way things are going with the weather we might need an inshore lifeboat in the Don valley basin

but at what point does our emergancy services stop helping those in peril at sea,
3 miles, 12 miles, or all the way to outer lalala land.
would your idea of it being funded only apply to inshore or offshore,
or are just unshore
already our ambulance stations are under threat,
our police stations are closing & merging with fire & rescue.
how long before we lose MORE coastguard stations and services ???
yet the funded services of RNLI grow with constany upgrades of equipement & boats,
FUNDED by donation,
not state paid for.
will we see our 3 emergancy services become just one, as the yanks & others do.
dial 999 and just hope its the right responce vehicle arriving.
with coastal & inland water, phone 999, ask for coastguard or RNLI,
it arrives with the correct service at the right time.

(like many others) right next to the north sea, well, thames estury part, and i watch our Clacton RNLI practicing every saturday & wednesday evening in any weather.
I also see call outs from them at any time of the 24 hour day.

and yes, I HAVE done fundrasing for them, as I believe in them,
as do those many who have needed there dedication.
people living inland have not one particle of idea of the need of dedicated people of the RNLI,
as we have more water surrounding us than land between our shores.

According to MREW, it costs people like me around 3k a year to be an active member of an MRT (lost earnings, kit, vehicle useage). It costs our team about 30k a year to operate the base/vehicles (we don't get an fuel discounts either, unlike normal private ambulances). This is all funded by donations. It'd be nice if the gov't did fund these services and members got reimbursed for their troubles. Quite often now MRTs are being called to help with urban searches for the Police as it costs them nothing to call out an MRT but would cost thousands to get the same number of bobbies to do a search.
More troubling for us is the fact that RAF SAR is being wound up. Without that service many more people will die on the hillside. Air Ambulance is virtually worthless as it cannot fly in the dark, over bodies of water (including lakes) or if the weather is a bit bad. RAF will bring their Sea King in for all but the thickest of pea soups. They can still fly, but generally at a reduced speed. Some how I doubt the commercial alternatives will offer a better service. How long before we start sending bills to people we rescue?

For sure, if someone goes for a strole up the side of a mountain in shorts and t-shirt then becomes a victim to the elements, there should be a ****wit tax. If you're trying to cross the channel on a water lilow and find yourself in trouble, charge a ****wit tax.

interesting viewpoint that "it should be funded by the government, so I'm not supporting it"
likewise a little old lady (or man) living on their own should be supported by their children. But if they don't speak to them or have lost touch, would you refuse to check on them in cold weather ?
A blind person should have a guide dog or carer to help them about through their day, would you refuse to help them cross the road ?
A single mum with kids in the car broken down in the middle of nowhere should have breakdown cover, would you refuse to help her ?
