check your diagrams for defender you will see they all only use B+ and D+ unless rev counter is fitted which isnt std on def i cant down load anything at the moment

So................ my engine has got 3 wires connected to the alternator (as in previous posts) my old engine had 3 wires on the alternator (as stated in previous posts) the op's alternator has got 3 wires on the alternator.......................

Anyone else with a defender have 3 wires on their alternator???

So why the 3 connections in the pic then?
Is it because the wiring diagram incorporates the diode and resistor as in the wiring diagram???

erm no

You got two thick brown wires going to the starter motor and ignition, a brown and yellow wire going to diode and resistor ;)

some alternators have the resistor and diode built in which is where you may have a white wire also connected to warning lights.

Most alternators have the diode and resistor in the voltage regulator - look at the diagram again - follow the brown/yellow wire from the alternator to the diode and resistor symbols ;)

thick wire goes to B+ , thin wire goes to D+ , white wire goes to W

Some of the 300tdi need the feed to turn out the charging light as the bulb make up part of the circuit....

I know the wirining is correct as i have just fitted a 100 amp alternator in place of the 65 amp one on my 98 300tdi.

the white wire with the spade was connected next to the B+ terminal on the 65 amp alternator(ehere the suppresor would also connect in) but the 100 amp one doesnt have this using the multimeter i found the the W terminal has contnuity between the B+ so i connected in there. Once im landy started to charge the light went out

I've just swapped my alt over. ya can't really go wrong, cos the ring terminals are different sizes and only fit one terminal each

but for claritylooking at the back of the alt when it's fitted. from wing to engine it's battery live feed, battery warning circuit, rev counter.

Well i'm not going outside tonight to check but i think its white with no tracer as white/slate on my haynes wiring diagram is for a low fuel sensor???

Yours is white too pikey?

Was thinking about doing a poll of defender 300tdi owners to see who had a white wire on their alternator................................... don't think i'll bother now

LR prob use same engine harness for defenders as they do for Disco's tuther end of white wire is prob just floating about in dash somewhere.

what are you thinking white/grey wire does?

My 110 had a split charge system fitted by LR special vehicles. (ex utilities landy) it could be the trigger for the split charge relay???

allus thought it were for rev counter option though.

The white/slate (ws) wire on my wiring diagram lights the low fuel warning light on the warning light panel according to the wiring diagram in the haynes manual

Easy way to find out: i'll remove the white wire from the alternator with the engine running and see if my warning light illuminates.............pretty sure it will though ;)
